The unassuming door to Bincho. In the morning it's a coffeeshop but it turns into a restaurant at night.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Since its a chicken speciality restaurant, it was a no brainer for us to select one of the chicken menus available. They also have a variety of other dishes, but since it was our first time there, we decided to stick to their sets.<br />
<br />
I got the $65++ set, and 'shio' yakitori<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbxQktZ1jOD0wT9tTk1gb9PByS1btu_h3TJ00hLoRgv1nsOD8INFVat-3pOiXV3vx4VfWCFoMQqLlTZt1gltzMp6tl4vuGXPEgNcA4MfN7cHbAHW-oqHwti_3gZVSao-oH8kC8s5gvCk4/s1600/IMG_8419.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbxQktZ1jOD0wT9tTk1gb9PByS1btu_h3TJ00hLoRgv1nsOD8INFVat-3pOiXV3vx4VfWCFoMQqLlTZt1gltzMp6tl4vuGXPEgNcA4MfN7cHbAHW-oqHwti_3gZVSao-oH8kC8s5gvCk4/s320/IMG_8419.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
The assorted appetiser, which had this delicious chicken pate (see left bottom).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Salad sticks and miso paste, as well as the "shio' platter with has chicken necks...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbfS6GH66MPn845EQ4wDw96PU35HvPqc9o1fjH2lqkPrduRRqOnV4qXgKgDfaYPtnvGMLOuPnYV3r_oSGKnMXVo57ZzSCeTWuJwrqeqPNbHPFle_i0O7LQMv4502c9c8jT7BaDKZXzxMk/s1600/IMG_8429.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbfS6GH66MPn845EQ4wDw96PU35HvPqc9o1fjH2lqkPrduRRqOnV4qXgKgDfaYPtnvGMLOuPnYV3r_oSGKnMXVo57ZzSCeTWuJwrqeqPNbHPFle_i0O7LQMv4502c9c8jT7BaDKZXzxMk/s320/IMG_8429.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
And a variety of chicken parts which also included the bishops nose (which is one of the things I don't eat), kidney etc.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghQlRzRT8f6_AWTRG_0Abd-fNPQxSlNZIZ7s-fLbNZl1UV6JapLa2WB70Q8qeh8mLt7yYAKDKJDrhlU-nEuK_p3suMy5IAvE-zf-LS3mWQ72rTvMXmqw69uFDdSyxTdvP4x6lZ7yVUP-E/s1600/IMG_8437.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghQlRzRT8f6_AWTRG_0Abd-fNPQxSlNZIZ7s-fLbNZl1UV6JapLa2WB70Q8qeh8mLt7yYAKDKJDrhlU-nEuK_p3suMy5IAvE-zf-LS3mWQ72rTvMXmqw69uFDdSyxTdvP4x6lZ7yVUP-E/s320/IMG_8437.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
The 'shime' of the day which was oyako don (chicken and egg on rice) - no complaints here - I really liked the chicken broth that came with the oyako don.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLW3qr7g6b_nbfCY9zJ2Xn-f9ZJONrgEXmsXKxQH7wvAa36YVcbr9ff-botVW6QhJ3SsOMLeQ1lpIwo1a_yrHilnl1tkniFADEkSf-5L16jQ_Om2sWoBlt-xeNAfZ68L4QoR7u_WaXVcs/s1600/IMG_8438.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLW3qr7g6b_nbfCY9zJ2Xn-f9ZJONrgEXmsXKxQH7wvAa36YVcbr9ff-botVW6QhJ3SsOMLeQ1lpIwo1a_yrHilnl1tkniFADEkSf-5L16jQ_Om2sWoBlt-xeNAfZ68L4QoR7u_WaXVcs/s320/IMG_8438.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Dessert was a variety of jellies.<br />
<br />
I added on 2 dishes to the above set :<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The Cock's Comb ($5) - which I was truly fascinated with. When I asked the waiter what this was - he said it was the red thing on top of the rooster (<a href="https://chinese.yabla.com/chinese-english-pinyin-dictionary.php?define=%E5%85%AC" style="color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 27px; text-decoration: none;">公</a><a href="https://chinese.yabla.com/chinese-english-pinyin-dictionary.php?define=%E9%9B%9E" style="color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 27px; text-decoration: none;">雞</a>) but just that it was not red after cooking anymore. No one else at my table wanted to try it. Surprisingly it tasted pretty good! It has the texture of chicken feet but not as soft, and slightly smoother. I finished the whole plate myself :D In Mandarin it's called <a href="https://chinese.yabla.com/chinese-english-pinyin-dictionary.php?define=%E9%9B%9E" style="color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 27px; text-decoration: none;">雞</a><a href="https://chinese.yabla.com/chinese-english-pinyin-dictionary.php?define=%E5%86%A0" style="color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 27px; text-decoration: none;">冠</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2nlq2nsujo0Hwzdb3fwU-yGLRtMgsYsvPo3tk3Cfg_q27aW3lEU-Yhf2zZsyUkcIYIg4Ga968gQoyLKRpsE2zTmRd6RAKar8MdQ_70iBKs5wyQDFF8cEh2dHOikJoSyEi2ZgMtb4DBts/s1600/IMG_8433.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2nlq2nsujo0Hwzdb3fwU-yGLRtMgsYsvPo3tk3Cfg_q27aW3lEU-Yhf2zZsyUkcIYIg4Ga968gQoyLKRpsE2zTmRd6RAKar8MdQ_70iBKs5wyQDFF8cEh2dHOikJoSyEi2ZgMtb4DBts/s320/IMG_8433.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
The grilled chicken hearts ($5) were also pretty awesome - I love the texture of the hearts and it doesn't have the gamey taste of the kidneys/liver. I thought that it went really well with the wholegrain mustard.<br />
<br />
The rest tried the Chicken Hotpot ($150 for 2persons) but since I'm quite adverse to steamboat cos of all the double dipping and when people throw in raw stuff when I'm trying in vain to scoop out the cooked foods already. That's why my favourite steamboat is the Bijin Nabe from <a href="http://nevertrustascrawnyfoodie.blogspot.sg/2014/01/tsukada-nojo-bijin-nabe.html" target="_blank">Tsukada Nojo</a> (since they have tongs and cook everything for you).<br />

The said hotpot - it's actually a portion for 4 people but since our table was too small they cooked it at the side for us.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The yakitori from the hotpot set - no innards here - chicken neck, chicken wings etc<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: start;">The delicious soup - it's similar to the soup I had with my oyako don. It was a really interesting dining experience - would definitely be back to try more of their yakitori dishes...</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

There's also a bar where you can get cocktails - about $20+ per drink<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Since the 3 little pieces of dessert wasn't enough to satisfy, we trooped over to PS cafe for more desserts.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br />When I read about Babette in the papers, I sort of dismissed it cos it was in some funny place which I didn't know how to get to (easily). Too lazy to use my brain or google maps to search out new restaurants. I didn't realise that Babette was located right behind Lavender food centre - always thought it was hard to get to so I never attempted to go there myself. Big mistake cos the matcha lava cake is to die for.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaCrJ000RHlhtUcbywcuXEKchemG05ShUjnmgR5TvOm2vGXSTyRhwY6u4RmfyiBzYHUMHisHeN5ZteLuAXDZi1U_PQ4GTo7BEquGujRBVc0NmQfUOtAjSQMyGj-Pmyv1oasn7VJSfT2ek/s1600/IMG_7507.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaCrJ000RHlhtUcbywcuXEKchemG05ShUjnmgR5TvOm2vGXSTyRhwY6u4RmfyiBzYHUMHisHeN5ZteLuAXDZi1U_PQ4GTo7BEquGujRBVc0NmQfUOtAjSQMyGj-Pmyv1oasn7VJSfT2ek/s320/IMG_7507.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>

I'm a great big fan of matcha flavoured stuff, even since having an matcha epiphany after eating the Haagen Daz green tea ice cream (my second most favourite flavour, just after coffee, which has been my favourite flavour the nearly the last 2 decades).<br />
<br />
The piece de renaissance - the matcha lava cake is really to die for (I am salivating away as I type this). According to MT, who is the Babette expert, the standard of the cake varies and sometimes, the outer crust is too thick. As I am a novice matcha lava cake eater, I did think my cake was really well done - the thin crispy shell, oozingly sweet matcha lava flowing out after I dug a hole in it (didn't manage to take photos - too excited trying to eat it). I really liked the ice cream (Kapiti, same as my favourite dessert from Marmalade pantry), and despite disliking adzuki beans, I felt that these went well with the whole Japanese dessert theme.<br />
<br />
I don't know why more people don't come up with the same dessert - it's such a refreshing change from the run of the mill chocolate lava cake.<br />

So after learning of their awesome matcha cake, I revisited the place about 4x in the last 2 months. The chirashi don is very affordable, but I do wish they got rid of those interfering bits of pickled carrots and daikon. I don't particularly like the taste, and in the dark it's hard to see if it's a piece f salmon or a carrot - and when I'm expecting a soft fatty piece of salmon, I instead bit down into a hard, sour piece of pickled carrot.<br />
<br />
I have a photo of the sashimi salad with their special house dressing. It's essentially the same toppings as the chirashi don, including the interfering bits of pickled vegetables.<br />

No complaints about the roasted avocado , except that they have the same annoyingly interfering bits of carrots and daikon. I'm not sure if this is done to bulk up the filling or what, but it is really intensely annoying to me at least (my dining companion was definitely not bothered by the same things as me).<br />

I'm not a big fan of Chinese Food (other than Dim Sum) but during special occasions/once in a (rare) while my parents do like to get some Chinese food. If I get it my way, I would go to a Japanese or Italian or French restaurant without a doubt. So we ended up at Grand Mandrina cos my parents friends invited them for a meal and I tagged along. </div>

The charsiew from Grand Mnadrina really lives up to its reputation. This is a charsiew not meant for daily nomms, it's a charsiew that should be reserved for special occasions (i.e. CNY, impress your MIL, impress your colleagues at some house party). I really love the crispy layer of caramelised sugar (think the surface of a perfectly done creme brûlée ). I'm not particularly fond of the layer of fat, but it does make the charsiew more juicy than the lean ones. Which is why I say that this isn't meant for daily consumption - not only will you get high cholesterol, you will very likely get diabetes too. The roasted duck was also perfectly done - with the skin shatteringly crispy and not a trace of fat under the skin. Paired with the truffle sauce, it was really memorable.<br />

Out of the 3 desserts we sampled, I would strongly recommend you to take the hot hashima and red dates. For $15, you get a bowl that's packed with hashima. Not just a few miserable bits. Compared to the other desserts that I tried (coconut ice cream with ai yu jelly, and the pumpkin puree with yam ice cream, which costs $12 each), the hashima was the most worth it dessert. I would suggest that if you don't like desserts to be too sweet, do request for it to have less sugar added.<br />

It's SG 50 this year so there's lots of hype, with lots of limited edition SG50 paraphernalia being sold and such. Milo has been an integral part of every Singaporean's childhood. It used to be THE morning drink that everyone drank before going to school. There's even a whole page of Milo related recipes from The Smart Local<a href="http://www.thesmartlocal.com/read/milo-recipes" target="_blank"> here</a>.<br />
<br />
The Milo Van used to be the highlight of my school life - whenever there was some sports related event (i.e. track and field/swimming competition/cross country), the Milo van was the sole and main attraction (for me at least). I used to hate all these sports days cos everyone will be packed under some horrible stifling hot tent, and we were forced to do cheers etc. I even felt that it would be much better having a regular school day than going for such events. Plus it usually meant that we would have to go to somewhere else (i.e. no transport back to school, since I live a stones throw away from school), eat some sad food, and the only facilities were superbly dirty toilets (also with long queues).<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Nostalgia in a cup </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Whenever we saw the green milo van, there would be a mass exodus of students from the seating area, and snaking queues would be formed along the sides of the van. Once one side was empty, the metal shutter would come down. I could drink 5 cups at one go (since the cups were so small) and since I wanted to do it discretely, I used to drink from one side of the van, then walk over to the other side to get the next cup :D<br />
<br />
I used to be very sad and disappointed when I saw the MacDonalds van instead, cos it meant that there was this really horrible tasting orange squash drink (even more so cos I hated orange). And the artificial orange squash drink could never compare to delicious milo.<br />
<br />
I always felt that the powdered milo could never compare to the Milo Van milo, or the canned/packet milo. So when I found out about the SG50 Milo Ice Energy, which supposedly tasted like Milo Van milo, I couldn't pass up on the chance to try it.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">"Normal" Milo 3-in-1</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Perhaps I'm older and more cynical now, but even though I followed the measurements on the Milo Ice Energy packet, I felt that the drink still didn't taste like the Milo Van Milo. Then again, it's been a decade since I've had the real Milo van Milo (tragic, I know... but it also means that I haven't had to go to some stuffy sports meet).<br />
<br />
I have been drinking the 'normal' powdered milo from the tea/coffee/milo machine in the tea lounge quite regularly, about 2-3x/week during my morning break, but I don't usually drink milo at home. I happened to have a pack of 3-in-1 Milo lying around at home, so here's a comparison of the ingredients from the Milo Ice Energy and Milo 3-in-1.<br />

<br />
So both of them have Palm Olein (!!) which is the fancy word for palm oil. Can't be very healthy...<br />
Other than having sugar as the first ingredient (which means that the amount of sugar is mor than the amount of coco or malt), both contain Protomalt (which is Milo's signature barley malt, think it's similar to Horlicks), and some minerals. There also isn't any skimmed milk in the Milo Ice Energy, perhaps that's why it can be dissolved easily in cold water.<br />
<br />
The main different I can spot is that the Milo Ice Energy has 'Medium chain triglyceride'. On searching <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medium-chain_triglyceride" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>, I found that these medium chain TGs are supposed to help burn extra calories, promote fat oxidation and reduce food intake. You can also read more about it here from <a href="http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientmono-915-medium%20chain%20triglycerides%20(mcts).aspx?activeingredientid=915&activeingredientname=medium%20chain%20triglycerides%20(mcts)" target="_blank">webMD</a>.<br />

Nutritional Information for both - it's pretty much comparable in terms of caloric content as well as sugars and fats (the main things I look out for when I read the labels) and despite not having any skimmed milk, the Milo Ice Energy has more calcium than the 3-in-1 milo.<br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

The powder is super fine compared to the usual milo powder, and it dissolves very easily in cold water. I made my first cup of Milo Ice Energy following the instructions on the packet, which was to dissolve 5 teaspoons of Milo Ice Energy into 150ml of cold water. It was VERY sweet, and noticeably thicker than the usual milo.<br />

Because after the first cup, I couldn't decided if it did taste like Milo Van Milo, I decided to drink a second cup. But after the second cup, I was way too full to drink the 3-in-1 Milo to make a fair comparison. Also it was so sweet I felt worried for my pancreas #firstworldproblems<br />
<br />
I do feel inclined to do a blinded study, just to check if it really tastes better than the 3-in-1 milo. I shall rope in my colleagues to do a taste test soon - stay tuned!<br />
<br />
Each packet of Milo Ice Energy costs $7.95 and no this is not a sponsored post. <br />

Although the name sounds like a Tzechar restaurant (it actually retained the name of the coffeeshop that used to be there), it's actually a cafe serving really interesting cafe food. Since my food radar has been down for quite a while, I've completely missed this place. But thanks to G who somehow found the place and booked it. This was the day that I also went to watch Jurassic World but then due to unforeseen circumstances (and bad planning on my part), didn't get to finish the show and I guess I never will :(<br />

<b>Salted Egg Sweet Potato Fries</b> ($12)<br />
<i>Twice Fried sweet potato fries, house made salted duck's egg sauce, crispy curry leaves </i><br />
<br />
The salted egg sauce was one of the best I've tasted - great flavour and no skimping on the amount of duck eggs, and the aromatic curry leaves made it even more fragrant.<br />
I somehow didn't really think that the sauce went particularly well with the sweet potato fries (though I also can't think of what would have gone better with the sauce). Sorry for the un-constructive criticism... I'll write it down when I finally think of what would go better with it...<br />

<b>Mentaiko Crab Mantou </b>($21)<br />
<i>Golden Fried Mantou, housemate mentaiko cream, season and breaded whole soft shell crab, papadum crisps </i><br />
<br />
Really interesting dish, though it's rolling in oil - fried papadums with orange sugar, crispy mantou (my favourite and most unhealthy carb), with deep fried soft shell crab. Unusual combination but really well executed. Would recommend this dish if you're not afraid of raising your cardiovascular risk.<br />

<b>The one and only Sin Lee's Fried Chicken and Waffles </b>($21.90)<br />
<i>Juicy boneless chicken leg, Iron waffle, house slaw and melted maple butter</i><br />
<br />
I thought that out of all their other main courses, this sounded the most mainstream. It wasn't exactly mind-blowing. Sure, the chicken was done well, waffles fluffy, and the coleslaw reminded me of the homemade kind you get form the western food stores in the hawker centres (which I really like btw).<br />
<br />
The texture of the waffle was good, but was a bit too light to hold up the weight of the chicken, and it became a soggy mess with the maple butter.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<b>The Croissant and Butter Pudding </b>($14)<br />
<i>Butter croissant, vanilla beans, assorted fruits, vanilla ice cream and salted caramel sauce</i><br />
Think of this as a level up from the usual bread and butter pudding. Worth a try.<br />
Don't quote me but I think it's Kapiti ice cream that they use. Kapiti vanilla ice cream is the best! Especially since its the same ice cream that Marmalade Pantry uses.<br />
<br />
We didn't manage to try the Aburi Broccoli salad ($12) which sounds really interesting, or the Macklemore ($20) which is spanish mackerel with corn and lap cheong relish, cos we were really really stuffed from the above dishes.<br />
<br />
The restaurant seating area is REALLY tiny so do book in advance if you want to sit inside (i.e. aircon). The parking's also quite a pain.<br />
<br />
I could feel plaques forming in my arteries after the meal. But it was really delicious and unique. Will definitely come back again since I'm nearby.<br />

My blog's collecting dust cos I'm very busy. Just a short update on what I've been up to in June, which involved contributing to Indonesia's economy thrice. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Went to Ubud for 4 days in early June to take a much needed break from work. My 2 months of misery has such long lasting effects - my friends think that I've undergone reformative training, and one even claims that my handphone has been hacked -___-" </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So many people have been raving about the Crispy Duck from Bebek Bengil, so I had to be one of those lemmings. I did my research before going there, so I managed to try both the crispy duck and the smoked duck (cos I can't pass up the chance not to!).</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Being my greedy self, I ordered the smoked duck (comes in a standard portion for 2 people) even though I was dining there myself, just because I simply could not have gone all the way to Ubud and not try it. It costs about SGD$30 for the whole set which includes keropok crackers, rice, some sticks of satay, a vegetable dish, and 2 fruit punch. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The smoked duck has to be preordered 24hours before, so I got my driver (yep got a driver cos I didn't want to worry about transportation) to drop me at the restaurant the day before to put in my order. They didn't require a deposit - not sure if it's cos it's low season but I read somewhere else that they do require a deposit?</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The smoked duck has a very strong herby taste, and a more gamey taste than the crispy duck, which is really quite dry and pales in comparison to the rich smells and flavours of the smoked duck. The duck is smoked in a betel leaf and stuffed with traditional herbs and spices. It looks like a mummified duck (as pointed out by WKR) but it's really very soft and moist, with the meat easily falling off the bone. Definitely a must try if you go to Ubud. </div>

<br />
I know I've been MIA-ing again - but today is an AWESOME day (minus me being extremely rusty) I am now so much more appreciative of what I have :D<br />
<br />
Here's a photo of Project Acai's Large Acai bowl cos it looks so bright and cheerful!<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
I think I have increased my risk of coronary artery disease at least a 1000 fold, grew at least 100 strands of white hair and numerous wrinkles, and that is not counting the zillions of pimples in the last 2 months!<br />
<br />
Seriously, I 'm not a self help book/video/article person but I did discover some good resources online. If you're unhappy please go and <a href="http://www.quietrev.com/want-to-be-happy-at-work-care-less-about-it/" target="_blank">read this article </a> (I promise you it's awesome, too bad it came out about 3 months too late for me) and get <a href="http://goodthinkinc.com/resources/books/the-happiness-advantage/" target="_blank">this book</a> (I read it from cover to cover). Or if you're too angsty and not in the mood to read anything - then watch this 10+ minute <a href="http://www.ted.com/talks/shawn_achor_the_happy_secret_to_better_work?language=en#t-6937" target="_blank">Ted Talk </a>with 11 million views (seriously there's SO MANY unhappy people in this world!) But I'm now not one of them!<br />
<br />
Alternatively, you can try some small changes (as recommended by the above Ted Talk), if you want to find out more you should read the book which explains why each method is successful in your journey to finding happiness.<br />
<br />
1. Writing down 3 gratitudes everyday<br />
Which I tried for like 2 weeks then failed cos I couldn't find anything being the highlight of my day, besides having a proper lunch break of a decent duration. There are a lot of apps which are free (another realisation that there are so many unhappy people in the world).<br />
<br />
2. Journaling<br />
I'm not into keeping this diary thing.<br />
<br />
3. Exercise<br />
Tried but didn't find it very useful, got an uneven tan and probably will get more age spots.<br />
<br />
4. Meditation<br />
Deep breathing exercises/yoga which works for the duration that I'm there, but my zenness dissipates within a day.<br />
<br />
5. Random acts of Kindness<br />
Didn't really try this since I usually just go to work and back without doing anything in between, besides exercising and meditating, which didn't seem very effective.<br />
<br />
Perhaps I'll be able to dig up a bit more inspiration to write my blog now that my stress levels have normalised and my mood is better.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrwe_ml30pnKckmWHOTdFQUCK05UI09Y3jYMTmGqM4fqPCHIhXlrfFi3-YfI8gbX1qDPZkMi7n-chnamn_-uU1gJnQ7XT6OsMxt16XP4dT4rYITLpQ4ErzbqXxgMloIhNE9Qf4AE1a_7k/s1600/IMG_7743.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrwe_ml30pnKckmWHOTdFQUCK05UI09Y3jYMTmGqM4fqPCHIhXlrfFi3-YfI8gbX1qDPZkMi7n-chnamn_-uU1gJnQ7XT6OsMxt16XP4dT4rYITLpQ4ErzbqXxgMloIhNE9Qf4AE1a_7k/s320/IMG_7743.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My black bunny, me, and white rabbit sweet hairband</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
You can also hug or rub an animal, which supposedly brings down stress levels. Bunny received many hugs and rubs.<br />
<br />
Or you can also perhaps repeat the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serenity_Prayer" target="_blank">Serenity Prayer</a> many many times (but I don't find it very helpful). Probably would be helpful if you are the religious sort.mhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16740388389467835537noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3043232222311363973.post-46746715113651739762015-05-28T09:59:00.000+08:002015-05-28T09:59:00.089+08:00Honey Creme<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

So the K-wave is far from over - but the good thing is that we have now gotten more delicious soft serve ice creams in Singapore. I'm such an old fossil (secretly 82) so I didn't want to go and crowd with all the other young things - so I have happily waited till the craze has sort of died down, before going to Honey Crème.<br />
<br />
One of my friends who is in the F&B line has told me that soft serve ice cream is one of the most preservative filled artificially flavored foods ever, but I really love the taste and texture of it, and shall stubbornly remain in blissful ignorance.<br />
<br />
I had to try their signature Honey Comb ice cream - which has their original soft serve ic cream with an entire comb honey. Honey on top of soft serve ice cream - such a brilliant idea - to add something sweeter to an already sweet item. <br />
<br />I don't recall ever eating real honeycomb ever (unless you count those fakey ones from the<em> ting ting tang</em> store wrapped in <em>popiah</em> skin with a dash of crushed peanuts). I didn't like the waxy taste that it left (spat it out cos it really was quite waxy) but the honey on top of soft serve ice cream exceeded my expectations. <br />
<br />
It's supposed to have a whole lot of minerals, trace elements, amino acids and enzymes but I'm pretty sure that the purported health benefits are vastly shadowed by the amount of insulin resistance you're at risk of... <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
They have quite a few other flavours, including a cotton candy one (sugar on top of ice cream, just like honey on top of ice cream). I think ths was the tea flavoured one with pearls. Great to have more choices than Llao Llao or Tsujiri only!<br />

<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There's been this massive influx of this Louisiana seafood restaurants. I haven't been to any of them till recently. Actually, if it wasn't a department dinner, I would definitely not have chosen this restaurant (not to say that it wasn't good). It's just that the whole eat with your hands concept isn't my kind of thing. I hate not using cutlery and getting my hands dirty in sauce (especially since I cannot answer my phone or touch my camera after that). </div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I personally feel that this whole hyped up eat with your hands, no cutlery or plates, is so that they save money on dishes. No need to spend detergent, soap and water washing anything (saves a few staff - no need to employ dishwashers) - since there is such a dire shortage of labor. Also, the plastic tablecloth is disposables, so it saves the effort in wiping the table. Efficiency FTW. </div>

<br />
We had the cornbread which was pretty ok - I somehow think that all cornbread should be like Kenny Rogers, but this ones were more uniformed and cake like. Slightly sweetish, moist and crumbly, went well with the whipped butter. <br />

I really liked the crab cakes - partly because it involves very little effort and yet you get mouthfuls of succulent crab flesh, and also because they were juicy and well seasoned. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkGZ53Tv7wCuvDb-nTmVgxEVW0rC88IWI-8JJ5jYgIEBSWTakrUz4e66TAx9WrD9zeYNYBvkeDEYx4htbkXxBD4KQIrfffQLvnsP-VEMbatEPAgNfRfcIh3qy_4Ojkhbs4XrOZX1hvEAE/s1600/IMG_6185.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkGZ53Tv7wCuvDb-nTmVgxEVW0rC88IWI-8JJ5jYgIEBSWTakrUz4e66TAx9WrD9zeYNYBvkeDEYx4htbkXxBD4KQIrfffQLvnsP-VEMbatEPAgNfRfcIh3qy_4Ojkhbs4XrOZX1hvEAE/s1600/IMG_6185.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
The bag of seafood - which has crab, prawns, mussels, potatoes, corn and carrot all cooked together in a mildly spicy Cajun sauce. I don't know why they can't just put everything into a nice bowl(like below) but have to pour it all over the table. <br />
<br />
The whole no plates concept also bugs me to no end cos the menu (which I doubt has been cleaned in recent times) and other dirty fomites (i.e. my hand phone) have just been sitting on the same surface that I'm going to eat off . Ok I think this is OCD max and I bet that the other 99.9% of the others diners don't think of this kind of thing, so I shall stop and carry on about the food (which is pretty good).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I must say that the service is not too bad. Not the most attentive but then when I told them that one of the crabs wasn't too fresh, they offered to change it (but then the other half was already devoured by someone else) - which still counted as pretty good service to me. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The clams in this creamy white sauce was also pretty good - just that I really cannot see how you can eat it without cutlery or plates for that matter. It's such a messy and stressful affair. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOIgtecRN7r-G0oARwZJBT8xNYo0DFevuSXIc7r2N3fXXRtzpJS8J35OZtmJzoBGm08ElRuE6fQqqAB1il2n_0cAAQn_Hlzz42sYTTTKBMrUax02YVtBOv2u2qfVksYE-jFnU6K2KFHOc/s1600/IMG_6200.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOIgtecRN7r-G0oARwZJBT8xNYo0DFevuSXIc7r2N3fXXRtzpJS8J35OZtmJzoBGm08ElRuE6fQqqAB1il2n_0cAAQn_Hlzz42sYTTTKBMrUax02YVtBOv2u2qfVksYE-jFnU6K2KFHOc/s1600/IMG_6200.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
I really liked their butter garlic prawns. Minimal sauce and flavoring so that the prawny taste can be fully appreciated. I think I'm deprived but I haven't eaten such big prawns for a real long time (rather spend my cholesterol quota on salted egg sotong - shucks I have a massive craving now). <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

These prawns were freaking huge and I really don't have small hands (that's my thumb btw). My fingers also continued to smell like sauce the whole night after that (thankfully the sauce smell went away the next day). <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I thought that their service was really strange - apparently they refused to let us make a booking for anything earlier than 7pm but when the punctual people reached earlier, the restaurant was empty - not like they are having two seatings or anything. Don't see why they can't let patrons sit down earlier (and earn money from drinks/snacks). </div>

Thai food is my 3rd most favourite kind of food - but since my chilli tolerance is pathetically low, I can't eat most of the ultra spicy dishes. I've tried Nakhon Kitchen in Bedok once (recommended by colleague KH 5 years ago) and most of their branches are located in really hard to get to out of the way places (i.e. industrial estates). I'm really glad that they have a branch in Holland Village now.<br />
<br />
Its a no frills extremely affordable Thai restaurant, which serves really delicious authentic Thai Food. Quite similar to <a href="http://nevertrustascrawnyfoodie.blogspot.sg/2008/10/diandin-leluk-golden-mile-complex.html" target="_blank">Diandin Leluk</a> at Golden Mile, just much more accessible.<br />

I their papaya salad as they can adjust the chilli level according to your tolerance. The pineapple rice is nice and sweet, and their phad thai tastes really authentic. Their fish cakes and prawn cakes are not bad either. Plus they serve water for free!<br />

Also, the prices here are really pocket friendly (much more affordable than Thai Express) and the taste is really good (lots of Thai staff here). Superb place for lunch when you're in the Holland V area. The queues can be a pain but if you eat lunch early at about 1130 it shouldn't be a problem.<br />

One of the highlights of going to Nakhon Kitchen is that I can hop over next door to get myself a bowl of Acai goodness from <a href="http://nevertrustascrawnyfoodie.blogspot.sg/2015/02/project-acai.html" target="_blank">Project Acai</a>. I'm not sure about the purported health benefits of acai, but since it tastes so good, I just take it as a dessert (plus perhaps half a serving of fruits).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcadGPFQLlQJBedOSpI1CduMzS680z91LbiJIN8IJs5ELENiVPLLTcAPTY9EeAtDshvpOi48An5iiTAwdEfZXY4EXU5hp8i7bkJ6n0tSdIBHJIFHA3VE6zIN8OvliWyuD9ciCekkYafiE/s1600/IMG_6215.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcadGPFQLlQJBedOSpI1CduMzS680z91LbiJIN8IJs5ELENiVPLLTcAPTY9EeAtDshvpOi48An5iiTAwdEfZXY4EXU5hp8i7bkJ6n0tSdIBHJIFHA3VE6zIN8OvliWyuD9ciCekkYafiE/s1600/IMG_6215.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
The acai pulp texture is similar to a slushie and it is the same shade of colour as red bean. I really like how refreshing it tastes, especially when paired with lots of fresh fruits.<br />

My 2 favourite dishes (other than all things Japanese) is actually the Crabmeat Linguine and the Sticky Date Pudding from Marmalade Pantry. Although I don't blog about it much, I do go there to get my pasta and dessert fix once every few months, for >5years already (shucks I'm such an old woman).<br />

I'm happy to say that they have maintained their food standards, although the prices of their dishes has risen exponentially. Oh how I miss the days when the Stick Date Pudding used to be $10 (yes I am secretly 82years old). I love their sticky date pudding (can taste the butter yum) and the huge scoop of Kapiti Vanilla bean ice cream and just looking at this picture makes me want to go back tomorrow...<br />

I really really like Teppei for its budget no frills super worth it chirashi don. But going to Tajong Pagar area during lunch time is really a major pain. Not only do I have to pay ERP, pay for the super expensive CBD parking when I finally get a carpark lot, I have to queue too. I'm so glad that Teppei has come up with the concept of takeaway chirashi dons. <br />

They have a very concise little menu, which includes a hamburg steak as well as some Japanese Curry dishes. But of course, I didn't manage to try those.<br />

The chirashi don is great - marginally less tasty than the original Teppei but for no queues and no carpark angst, I'll definitely come back here again. All those lucky people who work in the area - I'm envious +++. No frills fuss free seating - stools and wooden tables uncomfortable enough so you won't hog the seat.<br />

We were hankering for some dessert after Teppei, so after trudging around Millenia Walk, we settled on Tart Blanc. Because I wanted to eat the peach salted egg yolk tart.<br />
<br />
I must say that it is a really good combination - syrupy sweet peach on top of a subdued salted egg yolk custard. Served warm. The shortcurst pastry is just right - at least, for me. Not too buttery or oily and yet not too flakey or crumbly. Would definitely be back to eat more of this, when I next come back to have some Teppei.<br />

Hibiki restaurant has been there for quite some time but I've been dragging my feet and haven't gotten around to trying it. Dropped by Hibiki restaurant for lunch on a Sunday (recommended by C and WKR).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The yakitori is really good but isn't cheap. The Tsukune ($4.60/stick) which is their chicken meatball was very delicious, and so was their Tokujyo Pork ($5.80/stick). It's similar to what you'll get from somewhere like <a href="http://nevertrustascrawnyfoodie.blogspot.sg/2012/11/kazu-sumiyaki.html" target="_blank">Kazu</a>, just minus their ultra crampness and noise.<br />

We also had some yakitori vegetables - the Nasu ($5.50/2sticks) eggplant with a brushing of miso sauce, Eringi Mushroom ($5/2sticks) and their Shishitou ($3.20/2sticks).<br />

<br />
I really liked their tofu salad ($12) which is quite a generous portion. I'm a huge sucker for tofu salads, especially those with home made sesame dressing. The sesame taste was very strong and it wasn't as sweet as the ready made ones. I really liked how the sliced onions were nice and crisp.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We also had the Negitori don ($20) to share - semi fatty tuna minced with lots of sliced shallots on top of a bed of Japanese Rice. Similar to the tofu salad, I felt that the portion was good sized for the price.<br />
<br />
Overall we paid $70 for 2 people - not bad - will prob be back for a weekday lunch to try their lunch sets (the Yakitori don is $19++, comes with miso soup, chawanmushi and a dessert).<br />

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So we conquered 3 side-by-side restaurants within 3 hours - the last being BananaTree. </div>
<div>
All my judge-y friends walked past and completely dismissed the dessert cafe. Despite my best attempts to tell them that it really looked interesting - and all because of the name!! :OAnyway, I managed to persuade them to go in (despite all of them hating the name)and so that's how my post came about. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcWwqXUV9PGH0Tmq1pxKqYG6ZuLP_arNukourSOgSZ1WsKtJWbMk3cosweW3LEMSmBpy36JSH92p2m2z5eGcra0dmGk9GHS6awQh1ArzcGfPoQ7wK3w-muG6ZBRtXsgNZQdcqLRB2-d1I/s1600/IMG_6912.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcWwqXUV9PGH0Tmq1pxKqYG6ZuLP_arNukourSOgSZ1WsKtJWbMk3cosweW3LEMSmBpy36JSH92p2m2z5eGcra0dmGk9GHS6awQh1ArzcGfPoQ7wK3w-muG6ZBRtXsgNZQdcqLRB2-d1I/s1600/IMG_6912.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
They have a saccharine sweet concept - desserts on top of desserts and to top it off, and make their desserts even more cutesey - they stuff some flowers on top of the dessert. Presentation ftw. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So we tried 2 of their desserts (but not their signature cotton candy drink) - one of which (the small pot) was the banana chocolate pudding. I'm not a big fan of bananas unless they're in dessert - and their banana pudding really exceeded my (initially very low) expectations. Layers of cake, chocolate and banana packed into the small pot (on the left).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The large pot is actually the Korena Bing Su - which is essentially a Korean ice kachang. Topped with a huge ball of vanilla ice cream, red bean, and lots and lots of milk. I wouldn't buy this again though - rather spend my empty calories on the pudding. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVMq7myXxD9Ux3G0bg_wZ3LTlRWej6eTxGsTFFpaJdls53bKN_jkBnTnYPAxxKrAJy2Fwxc96ciq5-ao9ipb9AtHNVrp7HZkhuiPbccHwyW_Ub4VhRFNiO4b4SupHbOw5LkPf9rwMJxJI/s1600/IMG_6911.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVMq7myXxD9Ux3G0bg_wZ3LTlRWej6eTxGsTFFpaJdls53bKN_jkBnTnYPAxxKrAJy2Fwxc96ciq5-ao9ipb9AtHNVrp7HZkhuiPbccHwyW_Ub4VhRFNiO4b4SupHbOw5LkPf9rwMJxJI/s1600/IMG_6911.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
The interior is really bright and cheerful and best of all there's free flow of iced water. Service is prompt and efficient (they were rather empty when we went).<br />

So after my animal-fat-free pre-dinner snack, we hop next door to eat Muchachos.<br />
I've had it once (take away) and it was great - very filling and lasted me through the long and tedious night. So just before we went, the Straits Times had a section of all these incredible people who made their first million before they became 30, and one of them is the owner of Muchachos. I suppose my friends wanted to get some inspiration and hence decided to come here lol. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiioyIhUMOcgMbeoUttWc60AwivNj5HMiQaH5URmdJC4ECmzJR9Ut0dMkRYGapB75RF9idVltCwfMvHl1YkTW0Y0bgxJAIbj03TQOL4e04CNi7k-n8OEZWHxNRxhjM_DpumSZBNJ5tv_6g/s1600/IMG_6907.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiioyIhUMOcgMbeoUttWc60AwivNj5HMiQaH5URmdJC4ECmzJR9Ut0dMkRYGapB75RF9idVltCwfMvHl1YkTW0Y0bgxJAIbj03TQOL4e04CNi7k-n8OEZWHxNRxhjM_DpumSZBNJ5tv_6g/s1600/IMG_6907.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
I've previously tried the pork burrito, so I decided to try chicken this time. The pork is much tastier (and oilier) but then again, this whole thing is calorie and fat packed so I suppose a little bit more fat won't quite make a difference.<br />
Packed full with normal beans, refried beans, rice, cheese, salsa, guacamole - very delicious and very very filling.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPPr7AgYhb-bq8qXS44aCt-F3f2o273_PmOn3SYwQaXvjYCF1e2eZSVZeHycBKdt2fZ-psZheIG0T_3VjkQNzxkKB7EHFvmGA5Kd-qtP6SeYxsEK6unr4GQfLY-eQpQGLrdFOGKq7eegw/s1600/IMG_6909.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPPr7AgYhb-bq8qXS44aCt-F3f2o273_PmOn3SYwQaXvjYCF1e2eZSVZeHycBKdt2fZ-psZheIG0T_3VjkQNzxkKB7EHFvmGA5Kd-qtP6SeYxsEK6unr4GQfLY-eQpQGLrdFOGKq7eegw/s1600/IMG_6909.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
Corn chips with more guacamole. It's all bar seating save for 2 tables outside - so not quite an ideal place for large groups. They're doing a roaring business - lots of people eating in, taking away etc and the turnover is really quick! The burritos and burrito bowls cost $12.50 each, and extra toppings are around $1.50. Would definitely be back.<br />

Finally managed to find someone to accompany me and eat <a href="http://nevertrustascrawnyfoodie.blogspot.sg/2014/03/afterglow.html" target="_blank">Afterglow </a>(even though it was a pre-dinner snack). The usual response I get is usually the nose wrinkling and head shaking on countless occasions. My whole logic on why I like to patronise such restaurants is that anyone (or most people at least) can make anything taste good with butter and an assortment of animal fats. So I personally think it takes great skill (or great ingredients) to make something taste good without the use of such tasty fats. And that's something that I am quite willing to pay for.<br />
<br />
We had the Dragon Pom salad - which was lightly dressed in a lemon oil dressing and topped with chopped macadamia nuts and half an avocado.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1jScCyKuigo0Y3iZsR4Xt8enhOyTeQRtTMZVESQOTWwhHwRaOPLrJd-XhCBMsUrZ2X0DVQiOHzTzJCYmNOIIB0VWstZV-WOvlxIKtEcFbI5Kh0SKByKMYDvXrp-EdTReVnX6X4G7HNOs/s1600/IMG_6900.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1jScCyKuigo0Y3iZsR4Xt8enhOyTeQRtTMZVESQOTWwhHwRaOPLrJd-XhCBMsUrZ2X0DVQiOHzTzJCYmNOIIB0VWstZV-WOvlxIKtEcFbI5Kh0SKByKMYDvXrp-EdTReVnX6X4G7HNOs/s1600/IMG_6900.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
I also tried the vegan nut 'cheese' platter - I swear that the nut cheese tastes like the real thing - and there's some herbs, peppers added in so the texture really reminds me of a cheese dip. The crackers on the side are dehydrated beetroot crackers and green apple crackers. Would definitely return to get more of these.<br />

Walked past Neon Pigeon a few weeks ago - while trying to digest the pre-dinner snack from Afterglow (more about that in the later posts) and stumbled upon this newly renovated building - the Working Capitol. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br />
They have a no reservations policy - but then if you end on time like most normal human beings, it shouldn't be a problem. As most new restaurants nowadays, Neon Pigeon has this sharing concept - though the plates aren't that large. I would strongly recommend that you go in groups of 4, as the large portions are perfect when divided by 4. They recommend about 6-7 dishes so we got 7 exactly (despite haphazardly ordering random dishes).<br />
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1GQbCR5Gxz5iVsW5AtwHy1k4Cy__zXWKxFmv3R2crXtB5TW188hWMzy0RjvK5jczi32OEqpCbhxkvCW_uaN4v3DUt8-bLzke38XSJ2uKwnTLWbvOJj11c765PW4WHRqBr9ruORKwgzaw/s1600/IMG_6981.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1GQbCR5Gxz5iVsW5AtwHy1k4Cy__zXWKxFmv3R2crXtB5TW188hWMzy0RjvK5jczi32OEqpCbhxkvCW_uaN4v3DUt8-bLzke38XSJ2uKwnTLWbvOJj11c765PW4WHRqBr9ruORKwgzaw/s1600/IMG_6981.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
Since we were ravenous (at least half of us were), we quickly ordered the Smoked Pork Buns with pickled daikon and ginger, umeboshi and hoisin ($24). It's an atas version of the kong bak pau, with nicely steamed leaf mantous. Of course, unlike the humble $1.50 cousin, the pork belly was well done and marinated with a layer of crackling skin, and the salty pickles gave an interesting twist to an old classic.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqHTSCu17bMY4-IPpRX85D-WMjDEQgmY6U-3I9DnfD9yZHOYchmJsNr3U9hXGRsL9ZvHeLw2rwLs3DEDKLPXVql9VKeE0bjaWy6tDfa-71W44GyrZVeqRl528OOjg7DU2Hx_btETNO7v4/s1600/IMG_6984.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqHTSCu17bMY4-IPpRX85D-WMjDEQgmY6U-3I9DnfD9yZHOYchmJsNr3U9hXGRsL9ZvHeLw2rwLs3DEDKLPXVql9VKeE0bjaWy6tDfa-71W44GyrZVeqRl528OOjg7DU2Hx_btETNO7v4/s1600/IMG_6984.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
The other dish we got really quickly was the slow cooked octopus with cauliflower puree and shimichi ($38). I really love octopus, but then it's usually a hit and miss and I dread getting a tough as leather extremely chewy and bland tasting octopus leg - plus octopus doesn't come cheap so it's double the sadness. This octopus totally hits the spot - soft and tender, with a slightly salty, creamy cauliflower puree.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyfIaSBi6oT6RhO_HoZAeerAc9Uxdh8PkeeyqCxhMspONwRpudoL9yYK_DlyMB1gvENKKJKAa73KiQsOeU4Iaxt1_w4BAz2ZgoCUvjxZ1ee0OZtBqpcSbY2-wHCjUTPBsQ3f8L_KgPX9g/s1600/IMG_6988.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyfIaSBi6oT6RhO_HoZAeerAc9Uxdh8PkeeyqCxhMspONwRpudoL9yYK_DlyMB1gvENKKJKAa73KiQsOeU4Iaxt1_w4BAz2ZgoCUvjxZ1ee0OZtBqpcSbY2-wHCjUTPBsQ3f8L_KgPX9g/s1600/IMG_6988.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Smokey Eggplant - mint shisho and lotus chips ($$17) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
one of the starters - the lotus chips were really nice (despite being slightly oily) and the eggplant was lightly marinated in a tangy dressing. I'm pretty partial to eggplant so I quite liked this dish. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUEb79eJcjTuUFLi21eB-ejAoMVbmkump4cynAFFP-o1h6aOoKeoD-fg3YbGoGKC7lxlfUU9NxsExZkBXr6cqxoM902dDZ6k_xNwu4H0RpiorTVbBg3LxlfW1I0wDJuzue_rhMBYJxjmc/s1600/IMG_6994.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUEb79eJcjTuUFLi21eB-ejAoMVbmkump4cynAFFP-o1h6aOoKeoD-fg3YbGoGKC7lxlfUU9NxsExZkBXr6cqxoM902dDZ6k_xNwu4H0RpiorTVbBg3LxlfW1I0wDJuzue_rhMBYJxjmc/s1600/IMG_6994.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
The only dish of the day which fell short of our expectations - Tuna Crudo - miso pickled apple sprouts ($16). Essentially it was tuna sashimi with some salad leaves, the fuji type of apple and bean sprouts, with a mayonnaise based dressing. Absolutely nothing to shout about. I think you should try the other dishes - they sound much more interesting.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYOjMuIWfVgw32kqiHmnT_apjKBvoI9feVw-My78DaAHnk-AC2nvr5-wwpHBJmbUZqy9KSqThhLb8RMqQs9tZaDQengWxC8ll3_WHKjZkPEEkf2AAxe-2GBN3OUgsXcYX9-CZzmuiOp0I/s1600/IMG_6997.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYOjMuIWfVgw32kqiHmnT_apjKBvoI9feVw-My78DaAHnk-AC2nvr5-wwpHBJmbUZqy9KSqThhLb8RMqQs9tZaDQengWxC8ll3_WHKjZkPEEkf2AAxe-2GBN3OUgsXcYX9-CZzmuiOp0I/s1600/IMG_6997.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
Crispy brussel sprouts - mirin glazed bacon, karashi ($26)<br />
Good portion of brussel sprouts, with sweetish bacon bits - I conclude that anything cooked in animal fats will taste good.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibPXmTz7tsZtRKCBhNMv6UqHamMk3xDAabNoIjpLF75DBoblozx6t6lUDbjZ0kd_Vt448ldPbPiJIIp0_HdK_8E6hyphenhyphenwPQZH4KLzB1nbxy7VA-A7PWIXbNP7eDBE7RZpEL48fVtIwn8TJY/s1600/IMG_6999.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibPXmTz7tsZtRKCBhNMv6UqHamMk3xDAabNoIjpLF75DBoblozx6t6lUDbjZ0kd_Vt448ldPbPiJIIp0_HdK_8E6hyphenhyphenwPQZH4KLzB1nbxy7VA-A7PWIXbNP7eDBE7RZpEL48fVtIwn8TJY/s1600/IMG_6999.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
Grilled duck breast - 'katsu curry' pumpkin sauce($38)<br />
One of my favourite dishes for the night - the duck's breast was tender, juicy and completely unlike the over salted and preserved ready made kind. The sweet pumpkin puree acted as a foil for the saltiness from the duck, and I really liked how the little bits of red looked like the pickled ginger you get with the Japanese curry.<br />

House smoked bacon crispy pork skin spring onion egg yolk on rice $38<br />
Comes in a hot plate - I'm not a fan of the pork skin, but I really liked the rice. I would describe it as a cross between risotto and a bibimbap.<br />

The food came really quickly (perhaps because we were one of the earliest customers) and they were pretty efficient in topping up our iced water.<br />
There's no service charge here (unless you prebook for a group >6) and they don't take in reservations unless your group is >8. Worth trying if you're in the area and looking for something new.<br />

<br />
So after I went to <a href="http://nevertrustascrawnyfoodie.blogspot.sg/2014/11/india-darjeeling-and-sikkim-part-1.html" target="_blank">Sikkim last year</a>, I was super enthu about visiting more of the Himalayan countries. Managed to coordinate leave (nearly couldn't due to logistic issues but in the end can! win!) Went to Nepal for a non-hard core semi-trekking trip.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRib02YxjsyOsG_QO7iXxtsu3Gi4wfH0YZkc-vQgBgSC0ZEAjQLcoXbdoG7_xNjrbhTQt7xLRx2lKypD_T2pQMffxKwfYeakGPOmSdVgMoBsEjol9WdJ12HVHyonP6I-sqpo3kDt3nmGs/s1600/IMG_5638.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRib02YxjsyOsG_QO7iXxtsu3Gi4wfH0YZkc-vQgBgSC0ZEAjQLcoXbdoG7_xNjrbhTQt7xLRx2lKypD_T2pQMffxKwfYeakGPOmSdVgMoBsEjol9WdJ12HVHyonP6I-sqpo3kDt3nmGs/s1600/IMG_5638.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
We could see the Himalayan mountain range from the plane window - little did we know we weren't going to see it for the next 5 days after due to bad weather!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3GjwAi9JUEpWUPjiCY86_PCbGdkXPU8rhTEmbIAmrAdmo1f5-TVrsem0ocaXL1piPPK8w4EvjV72l5phYk1YV0Fpn3B93gzphg4ai376_RTcTlHvPFLckkYRnMVdothFemDIk5bOrZfw/s1600/IMG_5641.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3GjwAi9JUEpWUPjiCY86_PCbGdkXPU8rhTEmbIAmrAdmo1f5-TVrsem0ocaXL1piPPK8w4EvjV72l5phYk1YV0Fpn3B93gzphg4ai376_RTcTlHvPFLckkYRnMVdothFemDIk5bOrZfw/s1600/IMG_5641.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
Staying in Kathmandu must have been the most stressful part of the trip.<br />
The fragile valley has been subjected to rapid urbanisation, and there's quite a big issue with pollution and the traffic here is really impossible. Think tiny windy roads which are not meant to accommodate huge tour buses - it's a recipe for a massive jam every day. The roads are really dusty (not sure why, because they aren't dirt roads) and when we had to wash our clothes (more about that later) the water would turn brown. I don't want to think how my lungs look like...<br />
<br />
I was really happy to go over to Pokhara, which is really more laid back and relaxed, and most importantly (for me at least), not polluted so I can breathe lots of fresh air.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqQMMeiX4J7qcss6bTBwV88JiSLy_0KaCgW_RrlN1jdygzp5-a7NoIFKuheqZLDV02BVaUia1jo0hNI5_r2G97bmM2kc68VFnLG8JiK3I-IHhvxPIzmwKxw0KyXH0M9fxLRH8sVisMD2M/s1600/IMG_5645.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqQMMeiX4J7qcss6bTBwV88JiSLy_0KaCgW_RrlN1jdygzp5-a7NoIFKuheqZLDV02BVaUia1jo0hNI5_r2G97bmM2kc68VFnLG8JiK3I-IHhvxPIzmwKxw0KyXH0M9fxLRH8sVisMD2M/s1600/IMG_5645.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
If you look past the dust (which irritated my eyes to no end) as well as the traffic (and block out the noise too), Kathmandu can be really fascinating.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We also visited Durbar Square, which is located in front of the previous Royal Palace. The buildings here are built by Newari craftsmen and the intricate architecture is really amazing.<br />

I cannot imagine the amount of time it takes to carve all the wooden screens and stone blocks (also I cannot imagine what it would be like having to clean each hole in the wooden screen everyday)<br />

Inside the Kumari Ga, which is where the Virgin Goddess lives. Spent the time in Nepal reading lots of books (the bookstores here are amazing - extremely affordable print - I read more books here than I read in the last whole year...). I bought this book, which is a autobiography of Rashmila Shakya, one of the ex-Kumaris. It's a really easy and entertaining read, and explains the intricacies of being a Kumari, which was previously shrouded in mystery. </div>

The Nyatapola temple is a 5 storied pagoda. The statues on the staircase up are arranged according to strength - with man at eh bottom, followed by an elephant, gorilla etc It's a steep climb up, which wasn't made any easier as there were lots of tourists and some goats<br />

There's a portion of Durbar square that is overpopulated with its and lots of pigeons. I don't know why people keep feeding them - I'm sure that there would be an outbreak of some avian-bourne disease soon.<br />

We also visited the Bouddhanath Stupa which is one of the largest stupas in the world. The dome of the stupa has a lily pattern, and there are many multicolour prayer flags hanging from it, which makes for nice photos.<br />

I must say that I have never really eaten Okinawan food before, so I was pretty glad that someone suggested this restaurant. Of course, while waiting for everyone to arrive, we spoilt our appetites eating cream puffs from the restaurant directly opposite the diner, as well as giving into temptation and eating Japanese curry rice from the food court in Mediya :/<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The quintessential Okinawan dish - Champon which consists of bitter gourd and tofu, stir fried with pork belly. I found the dish slightly too salty for my taste (though I do understand that the Japanese like their food salty). It was well executed - hardly any bitterness from the bitter gourd and very tasty.<br />

Eggplant and minced meat stew - most of us found the eggplant slightly undercooked, and were not used to it cos the usual eggplant we get locally are usually cooked to death and mushy. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be like that?<br />

The star dish of the day - was the roasted pork ribs with cartilage. Can you imagine the cartilage cooked until it was oozingly soft just like jelly. Plus it was well marinated and slightly charred. Mmmm I will go back just to have this dish! <br />

Stewed pork belly - not a fan of pork belly. The sauce is slightly sweetish and the carrots are stewed until soft. Everyone else loved this so I think I'm just an anomaly. </div>

We had to eat some carbs, so this chilled ramen was perfect for sharing and ending off the meal.<br />
<br />
Even though we ate so much, I think the bill was about $30 per person (without alcohol), which I think is a very very decent price considering what we ate. Will definitely come back.<br />

We adjourned to the desert store above for some Bandung and green tea chiffon cake. Perhaps it was diminishing returns but then I didn't find either cake particularly mindblowing. Though I must confess that I was super stuffed from dinner and my pre dinner snack...<br />

I would highly recommend you to call and make a booking - the restaurant initially looked empty but it was really full by the time we left at about 830pmmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16740388389467835537noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3043232222311363973.post-30490957832807085082015-03-17T22:32:00.001+08:002015-03-17T22:32:46.367+08:00Saveur Art <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ok long hiatus again. I'm still drafting my other posts so I've decided to post a new place worth of mentioning. Most people will be familiar with the Saveur group, which is well known for its affordable French food, as well as Concertto, the sister restaurant which serves Italian food. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Saveur Art is the more atas version of that. It serves a 4 course dinner for $59++</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Do note that I went a few months back, and they have changed their menu </div>

Added a foie gras - comes with pickled pink radishes, and radish broth<br />
Pretty average - I prefer my foie gras pan seared.<br />

Egg Confit with roasted macadamia nuts and brown butter<br />
Very creamy and delicious! I really liked the different textures of the crispy stuff and the light foam and the creamy eggs.<br />

Slow cooked cod in olive with fresh baby squids, artichoke and paprika foam<br />

Roasted French Pigeon with beetroot and pickled morel mushrooms<br />

Chocolate and pistachio - Guanaja Fondant, Tanariva mousse, Ivory espuma, Araguani chips and pistachio ice cream.<br />
I think this should have a little blurb with an explanation of all the things I cannot pronounce. I'm not a big fan of chocolate desserts, so I wasn't particularly crazy over this dish.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

For cheese lovers - I will highly recommend that you top up $14 for an extra cheese platter. Their usual ala carte price is $24 so you're saving $10 bucks/ And the cheese is pretty darn good!<br />

For the number of dishes, it is pretty affordable, but I would have much preferred it if there were slightly larger portions. Other than that, no issues with the reservation/service/food quality.<br />

I've had the pleasure of dining at Sushi Mitsuya quite a few times since they first opened. Having lunch there is really exciting as I always get to try new fish that I've never had before. Usually, I'll try to go during different seasons, so that I can try different kinds of fish. I usually go for the Ichie (entry level lunch set at about $70) because I'm feel too poor to indulge in anything else, and eating lunch there is an indulgence by itself already... Being the last minute person I am, I tried to book lunch on the day itself and to my horror it was nearly full! Managed to snag the last lunch seats there. Whew!</div>

Glass fish - I thought this was really interesting - it's similar to the baby fish that we usual fry in the egg, slightly slimy and a bit crunchy (I'm guessing the crunch comes from the skull or eyeballs here) and lightly marinated. I liked the way that it was moulded into a little mound on top of the sushi rice.<br />

The lunch will not make you feel uncomfortably full - most of the time if I'm not exceptionally famished, this will leave me feeling about 80% full (which is supposed to be the correct level of fullness) but since lunches are rare, I usually fill the extra 20% of stomach space with dessert.<br />
<br />
Of course, dessert is Tsujiri at the nearby 100am mall.<br />

Comnam is the sister restaurant of Namnam. Namnam at Raffles City had a ridiculously long queue so we decided to give Comnam a try. Dishes are quite affordably priced and the mains were around $10. </div>
We got some starters to share - including a refreshing salad, grilled pork belly with corn (of which I liked the corn better) and some sticky rice based dish (bottom right) which I cannot remember what it is... not very memorable I think. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The main dishes are rice based - the rice used here is broken rice, which supposedly absorbs up the gravy and sauces better than normal rice. I'm not a big fan of rice unless it's sushi rice, so I wasn't particularly impressed with my main of grilled pork with broken rice.<br />

Generally, from the assortment of mains we ordered (4 different) we came to a conclusion that the fried ones tasted the best... It reminds me a bit too much of cai fan so I'm not a fan, but I suppose that if you're looking for a not very crowded place to eat at, this should do the trick.<br />

As much as I hate being unadventurous and boring, I do quite like Poulet for it's accessibility, affordability and acceptable food. </div>

I really like their signature salad (about $10) which is very refreshing and lightly dressed, so much so that we had to order a second one to share cos it wasn't enough...<br />

The truffle mashed potatoes were awesome but then the consistency makes me really worried that there may be a 1:1 ratio of potatoes to butter.<br />

Since this was about 2 months ago too, it was Christmas and we decided to try their apple sauce chicken wings, which were quite unmemorable. I think there was some promo so we got it...<br />

And of course, their chicken, which was tender and nicely roasted. Hasn't disappointed me and I've tried it about 3-4x since they opened. Just too lazy to blog about it heh.<br />

Poulet didn't have their awesome banana crumble that they used to have - so we adjourned to St Marcs cafe for some delicious parfaits - I wouldn't recommend the strawberry parfait cos it was way too sweet and only had frozen strawberries... but the Kyoto delight which I usually have (in the background) is really delicious especially with the Warabi mochi pieces that I really love and the roasted soybean flour.
