Halloween dinner

My Halloween costume - ebi sushi since I like sushi so much.
The tutorial can be found here http://m.instructables.com/id/Sushi-Nigiri-Costume-with-Headpiece/

I used a small pillow stitched up at one end and pasted orange felt pieces cos I can't stitch (with the normal needle and thread).

The dinner spread which wkr and Chris made.

Graveyard of dips and ghost eggs.

Jelly with lime.

Tiong Baru Bakery

I've been living under a rock for the past few months so it was time to go out and get some sunshine (hopefully no melanomas in the process). And i just had a mega marathon sleep from 5pm to 8am today so im definitely more refreshed than usual. First stop of the day was the insanely crowded tiong baru bakery where I da-paoed and assortment of freshly baked goodies. (Btw thanks to pok for the recommendations!)

Was going out for a movie (perks of being a wallflower -which is not my kind of movie) so I didn't get to try their tarts but I got myself some of their hardier pastries.

So far, I've tried the chocolate almond croissant and the almond brioche. The chocolate croissant is delicious and probably worth all the LDLs in there. The brioche was mehhhh in comparison.
Haven't tried the other two tho! I'm really really full from stuffing my face today.

Btw I have two new life mottos (i cant wait for the new year but decided to start early) which is -
1. why try so hard, why bother (we are communist anyway)
And
2. I shall do more things that improve my health and my wealth
So far I'm achieving the first one and part of the second (not the wealth part yet).

Kuriya's mountain of uni

Kuriyas monthly special lunch set was this uni set (limited to 10 sets/day) fortunately they still had stock even though our lunch was rather late. No regrets ordering this $50++ set cos it was really a mountain of uni and chopped assorted sashimi. Not as fresh as the kind u get in Japan but pretty close! And the bontan ebi was a joy to eat (even though I'm allergic to raw prawns) - the head was so delightfully crispy and lightly salted that I ate everything except the eyeballs.

The other set was a grilled ?saiyuri fish which was very fresh, and thick sashimi. Both sets came with a salad starter, miso soup and dessert of the day which was pineapple custard and a small scoop of black sesame ice cream.
Though some people will disagree with kuriyas no children under 6 years old dining policy, I, for once am totally for it. No annoying screeches or crying or kids running around and disturbing my peaceful meal of slurping down sweet uni.

Dean and Deluca

Tried Dean and Deluca at Central on a weekday. The queue is insane on weekends. Though I must say that the food is very underwhelming and I was not impressed at all by my bagel cos it was hard and dry and the cream cheese was spread so thinly that I could hardly taste it. The scrambled eggs were a bit too runny but tasted creamy enough.

The pancakes fared much better.
I definitely wont be queuing here. I'm feeling that the local food has been very uninspiring lately and it's extremely expensive for something u could easily make at home. Oh well.

Currytime

A rather new restaurant by the founders of old Chang kee - relive yesteryear with those tin plates, marble tables, tiffin carriers, cheong sams and old style music at Currytimes.

I had the lunch set ($8.90 nett) which was their signature chicken and potato curry, choice of prata or bread or rice, side dish of the day and drink. The curry is supposed to be very wholesome and indeed it was so thick and rich it's hard not to believe that no coconut milk was used. Though the curry was not bad, the prata was an immense disappointment and simply unsatisfactory. Chap Chye was bleagh.
Fortunately, I had foresight that it would be inadequate to fill my growling stomach and ordered their signature curry bun ($1.50) whih was spectacular! Think old Chang kee curry puff filling in a soft fluffy toasted bun. Salivating as I type this...
Btw I was so famished I also ordered the Chendol ($3.90) which was another disappointment. Thin stringy Chendol and clumpy coconut milk. The attap chee was one of the best quality ones I've eaten - translucent fat and juicy. Mmmm!

Best Apple chips

I'm studying for my exams now and I've just found a great snack to munch while ploughing through Catherine parchment smith.

Apple chips from Taste matters (www.taste-matters.com.sg) superbly thin and crunchy -those store bought ones really can't compare. Tastes like real apples and great for snacking on. Best of all there's no added sugar. $16.80 for 6 small packs. Go to their website and make an order -free delivery with $30 and above.

Cebu

I've been neglecting this blog far too long partially cos of work commitments (especially since i feel that Im dying a few days earlier after I finish each shift...Its quite strange cos previously I just felt like I aged more aft each call ) and partly because I'm feeling great inertia to blog about the foods I've eaten. ...Shall try to start again!

I've just returned from the beautiful island of Cebu where
I gouged myself on mangoes. Philippines is one of the major exporters for dried mangoes and I'm sure most people have tried the famous 7D dried mangoes.

Halo-halo is one of the popular Filipino desserts. It's a combination of yam
(ube) ice cream, attap seeds, jelly, beans, shaved ice and milk and it's a refreshing dessert on a hot day. Sometimes it comes with A caramel custard like pudding too. It's not too sweet either cos there's shaved ice to offset the creaminess and sweetness of the ice cream.
I'm not sure if anyone else remembers but when I was younger and my maid came back from her holiday to Philippines she will buy halo halo ice cream and it'll come packed in dried ice so that it can survive the flight back to Sgp. Somehow the yam Ice cream from Philippines tastes better than the ones we get in Singapore.

Till the next time! Hopefully soon!

7Adam

7Adam is this newish little known restaurant housed in one of the black and white colonial bungalows in Adam Park. Parking is in the premises and is free. Was there to try their appetisers and had a iced chocolate (quite underwhelming) but their kit kat alcoholic drink (can't remember what it's called exactly) looks really tempting, but comes with a hefty price tag of >$20++
The portions are tiny, taste is average, service was pretty good cos when we went there it was nearly empty (it was at a very odd time, after their lunch hour) but they very kindly obliged us and prepared food even though the kitchen was supposed to have closed:)
I think it's a great place to chill and relax, especially since they have such nice seating and decor (though being truly singaporean I would hate to sit al fresco, even though the al fresco seating area looks really nice! I don't appreciate sharing my dinner with all the flies and mosquitoes...).

Joo joo - by awfully chocolate

The banana nutella crepe ($16++) exceeded expectations with a halved banana and a partially melted sugar crust. I liked the way that they didnt completely melt the sugar so that there were contrasting textures. My only grouse was that there wasn't enough nutella - perhaps it could come with additional nutella on the side.

The apple tart was not bad either with a thin fluffy puff pastry and a thinly sliced apple on top.

I also got the pandan tart ($6) from mooshi baked (the bakery arm) which came in an unusual shade of green. The pandan filling texture was closer to custard than a pudding/jelly and I didn't quite like it cos it also tasted too eggy.
I'll definitely be back to try their breakfast menu and more crepes as well as their nutella drink (as u can tell I really like nutella)
