Texas Chicken - TXtreme Chicken

Original chicken in front, Jalapeño Txtreme Chickne at back
Texas Chicken has recently introduced a new flavour recently: the Jalapeño Txtreme Chicken. I was given 2 vouchers to try the new chicken flavour. I was initially a bit apprehensive about eating the spicy chicken because my chilli tolerance is really pathetic (I can't eat the MacSpicy chicken burger without tearing up), but I found the heat from this chicken tolerable. To be fair, I haven't had the MacSpicy since 4 years ago, but I doubt that my lousy chilli tolerance has improved very much since then.
Jalapeño TXtreme Chicken
It tastes more of Jalapeño, with a mile peppery aftertaste, rather than just chilli heat. The Jalapeño taste is very prominent, and its special marinade of Jalapeño peppers and spices gave it more kick than the original. The batter layer is very crispy, and like most other fried chicken, is the tastiest layer of the chicken. I got both the original and the Jalapeño TXtreme chicken flavours to compare the difference, and amongst my family members, we unanimously agreed that the Jalapeño flavour was the tastier one.
Here's a close up comparing the Jalapeño TXtreme chicken (left) and the original chicken (right). The batter is much crispier than the original chicken. A 2 piece chicken meal, which includes a handmade Honey Butter biscuit, a side (I liked the coleslaw), and a drink costs $8.20. Would I eat it again? Definitely will consider it when a fried chicken craving hits.

There are currently 10 branches of Texas chicken in Singapore. I went to the Star Vista branch cos it's the nearest to my house. The other branches are  at: nex, Vivocity, Great World City, Westgate, Causeway Point, Gardens by the Bay, Changi Airport, Expo, Causeway point, Changi City Point

Har jeong Kai nuggets

Was around in the Ghost town orchard central today when I walked past everything with fries (EwF) and saw this poster. Couldn't resist trying the har jeong Kai (prawn paste chicken) nuggets.

EwF has just made fast food tastier and even more tempting by making a boneless version of everyones favourite Tze char dish.

It smells great and makes your mouth water when you take a whiff of it; and it's fried on the spot so you'll get a piping hot box of these nuggets.
It comes with honey mayonnaise which is pretty mediocre but the chicken is soft and tender and unlike the Tze char ones, you won't need to pick the meat off the bones.

Taste is good though it's really oily it should come with the warning label "heart attack in a box".
I think EwF is doing much better than its counterpart Loola's - tried the one at Esplanade last month and it was quite dissappointing.

Freshness Burger - Spam Burger

Happy Chinese New Year to all my Readers! I know I've missed New Years and Christmas :(

Next post up will be the obligatory lo hei dinner post :D And after that, hopefully I will stop procrastinating and start on my Pamplemousse post!Had the Spam Burger from Freshness Burger (after a positive experience, and after checking out a couple of blogs and finding that most people who tried it enjoyed it). At first sight, I thought my eyes were deceiving me cos the bun was white and coated with sesame seeds but I distinctly remembered the chicken teriyaki burger had a soft yellow bun! Fret not cos the teriyaki chicken burger really has a different bun from the spam burger.

The Spam Burger has a pan fried thick piece of spam (aka Luncheon meat) sandwiched between their signature juicy tomato slice (big sweet and red) and a sunny side up egg. In the other blogs that I checked out, they had runny yolks which looks so delicious - imagine the golden yolk oozing over the spam and dripping onto the burger - makes me feel like eating one right now. Perhaps it was cos I had takeaway so my egg wasn't runny anymore?

The spam makes the burger really delicious especially when coupled with a warm fried egg and cottony soft buns. Somehow unhealthy food tastes so good - perhaps it's cos it's a rarity? There's also a bit of mayo with the shredded cabbage at the bottom so the whole burger is nice and moist. I liked how they used cabbage instead of lettuce cos the lettuce would just soak up all the oil and turn translucent and gross. The cabbage still retains it's crunchiness and adds texture to the burger.

Of course, I had these with my Kiwi Mix Protector ($4.90) in hopes of its antioxidants clearing out the junk I've been eating, just because it has real fruits blended in ;p I still stand by my avocado salad ($3) which comes with nice ripe diced avocado, minced onions and cucumbers, with a dash of what I think is Tabasco for some zing.

The coleslaw on the other hand is very unremarkable - the corn is sweet and juicy but the dressing lacks a punch and it's only shredded cabbage and corn and isn't particularly tasty.

I also decided to clog up my arteries with the onion rings (highly recommended by atetoomuch) and I had no regrets. Whole onion slices deep fried in a light airy batter (think the kind of batter that comes with beer battered fish and chips, minus the beer). Though my only complaint is that the portion is rather small and after popping what seems to be a few of these onion rings in, you'll realized that you're through the packet before you know it.

When I was working today, I had one extremely nice incident and another unpleasant thing happening to me. I was so touched by the first one and it really made my day:D
The other one was this filthy liar b*tch (and it's not the female dog I am talking about) that I was unfortunately working with previously who I again had the misfortune of interacting with today. Of course, what goes around comes around ;) We shall have to wait and see;P

VeganBurg

Tried vegan burger on a weekday last week. The name is such an oxymoron and I don't know why people want to eat pseudo-meat (with the exception of myself since I am very kaypoh and want to know what everything tastes like). I suppose eating pseudo-meat is against some peoples principles;) Actually I have no idea why people need to make fake meat when there's perfectly good meat around other than for religious reasons. Personally I don't see why bother making vegetable material into the form of real meat - I mean doesn't the thought of eating meat make vegetarians feel guilty?
This is the Tangy Tartar ($5.85 for the burger, $9.85 for burger, fries and juice) which is a breaded flakey vegan patty (I suppose it's trying to be a fake fish patty?) which was supposed to come with lettuce and alfafa but the latter was missing. It comes with a whole meal bun and tangy tartar sauce (which tastes like tartar sauce with an extra squirt of lemon).
Their pseudo fish patty is deep fried and has a texture quite close to a badly fried fish fillet but it was the better burger out of the 2 we tried that night.
I had the Pineapple soy burger and the patty was actually quite mushy but had the texture of meat and didn't really taste of much besides the sweet plum sauce. The ciabatta bread was one of the highlights and I liked that the bread came with pumpkin and sunflower seeds. Though I didn't quite enjoy my burger cos it was too sweet and I was really craving for something savory.

From my very limited experience with all these soy patties and Iif my memory doesn't fail me, and if I remember correctly from my secondary school days, they actually can use yeast in a reactor and then spin down the proteins to make these patties! so some of these vegan patties are actually made from yeast cell walls though I think Vegan burger uses soy. Btw, Marmite/Bovril is also made from yeast... I've tried the Subway Veggie patty (which is very ridiculously priced cos it's flown in from the USA) and I think they're more or less the same - quite mushy and not having any particular taste.

There's also some more interesting burgers like the Char-grilled satay burger and another one called Cracked pepper mayo which has a vegan patty with cracked black pepper. I suppose if I ever come back, I'd go for one of the more 'tasty' ones.

The meals all come with seaweed fries which are pretty unremarkable, but then again, I am not a fries lover.
I also had the spinach potato pops which are quite pricey at $3.80 for 5 pieces (looks like alot but its just lettuce underneath). Wouldn't try those again... It's like deep fried herbed potato balls nothing amazingly special. But I would have liked to try the veganfranks which is a pure vegan sausage (but it really looks like a sausage!) I really want to know how a fake sausage tastes like...

They also have these really 'healthy' drinks like passion fruit and orange juice hough it's not freshly squeezed. I had the spinach and wheatgrass which j thought tasted moe syrupy than anything and it had a fruity base (I think it's pear juice?). Somehow after having this meal I missed my usual coke/green tea.

I think it's a pretty interesting concept but I'm totally heading to Freshness Burger at Century Square instead! And just a note if you're curious about Vegan burger - I was studying their menu and I think that if you want to try the burger and vege franks, the best meal to get will be the VeganKidz meal which has a kid sized burger (Looks like the tangy tartare one) and vegefranks and fries, including a kid size juice.

Freshness Burger at Nex

Hello everyone! I've been MIA-ing again but I'm actually free-er now with more regular working hours even though I feel like someone has suddenly pressed the 'slow motion' button on my life! It's a morning crawl around instead of a heart pumping adrenaline surge in the morning(which I much prefer!). And on top of that I feel redundant! and like I haven't moved around in eons even though it's been only 3 days and my day feels uberrrrrrrr long! Hopefully it stays this way so I can slowly sink back into a nice relaxed mode which I have not been doing for the past 8 months.

Here's another post on food I ate during my end of December annual leave. I ventured North to try the much raved about Freshness Burger from Japan. Prior to this, there weren't many Japanese burger joints. My teriyaki chicken burger ($4.50) which is really better than Mos burger's. The serving is rather small (the bun is definitely of a smaller diameter than the usual burgers from BK and Macs) but the bread has the nice bakery smell and has a nice yellow hue.
The chicken isn't over salted (I tend to find food from most Japanese chains too salty) though it is rather thin widthwise.
I suppose that I like the burger bun more than the filling, but then again, since I don't eat beef, the bun is usually the main draw and then the filling secondary.
I had the Kiwi Mix Protector ($4.90) which is also the most expensive drink on the menu. I asked the counter staff if it was made from fresh fruits and she said yes - so hopefully all those antioxidants in the kiwi and pineapple will negate those generated by my burger. It's quite refreshing and has little bits of kiwi seeds which get stuck in my teeth. It's even more expensive than my burger...
I also had the Avocado Salad ($3) which is really nice and refreshing - the tomatoes are the nice mega large juicy kind (see the thick red piece in the burger below) and they are even skinned. The avocado is slightly mushy and the Christmassy combination of green avocado and red tomatoes are topped with chopped fresh shallots and a dash of spicy sauce. I think they go really well with the burger and I ate half of it as it was, and another half over my burger.
The Freshness Burger ($4.50) has a beef patty and some chilli sauce as well as their picture perfect juicy red tomato. Can't comment on this since I didn't eat it.
One gripe is that the burgers are really much more pricier - the pricing above is for the burger alone with no fries. I didn't manage to try the fries which are supposed to be really good cos they're made from Hokkaido Potatoes.

Burger Bench and Bar

There's quite a few non-beef choices, including the Japanese curry chicken katsu burger ($7.90), soft shell chilli crab burger ($7.90) and Green Curry Catfish Burger ($8.20). But if you want a grilled option, it's only the chicken breast burger ($8.50) which is what I had for dinner. I found the chicken breast pretty alright, though not as juicy as I would have liked. It comes with their yummy chunky tomato relish and some jalapenos for spiciness (though I don't take spicy stuff so I threw them out). Bun is pretty normal - nothing fantastic and not toasted either. I'd prefer it if it was toasted and buttered - untoasted buns just give the burger a very unfinished feeling. Of course, if you eat beef, you really shouldn't get this burger - chicken is always the less tasty of the two...
This is the cheese and mushroom beef burger ($8.20). Of course I don't eat beef so I cannot say how it tastes. Just that it's unremarkable? Lol neither dry nor juicy I suppose...
Their signature soft serve dark chocolate ice cream ($3) which is pretty good, though it's really not as creamy as I'd have liked it to be, it's very chocolatey and a really nice way to end the meal.

Burger Bench and Bar's started up by Willin Loh, who also owns Wild Rocket and Relish. It's supposed to be a mid-range fast food joint targeting younger people with tighter budgets. They don't use preservatives, MSG, processed meat etc but it's still pretty pricey compared to the other fast food joints, considering that the prices I've quoted in my post are only for the burgers - you'll have to add about $1.50 (or is it $2?) if you want their special hand cooked potato chips. I suppose I won't mind visiting it again - but going to Cine really makes me feel freaking old :(

En route to MBS - Happy Lemon and 4 Fingers Bonchon

On Thursday, I had my 2nd most productive postcall (which explains why I was awake for >35hrs with about an hours sleep in between) - because I decided to make the most use of my time and stop going home to sleep for 14hrs straight (which is what I usually do), and to go to Marina Bay Sands, just to take a look at what it was like.
Thanks to Fish (who was also on leave :D) who went to search and check up on the eating places (she did the search and said it was not feasible for us to eat at MBS itself since we have tight budgets till the 15th next month, and that we should try Parco instead) and how to get there or we would have been incredibly lost!
On the way there, I stopped over at Ion orchard and indulged in my Happy Lemon. For once, I got myself the milk tea (which I have been avoiding cos I need my sleep at night and sometimes the caffeine keeps me awake) and had it with puff cream (according to the server, it's made of egg protein or something) and oreo bits. The oreo bits became rather soggy and started clumping together, so I had to work quite hard stirring it up. I think the tea from Gong Cha (now at Square 2) is better, but I like Happy Lemon for their fruity and yogurt and yakult drinks.
Being greedy, and since my tummy was waking up (usually don't feel so hungry cos I'm very very tired), and being unable to resist trying new foods, I went to get myself a 8 piece Bonchon chicken wing/drumlet set. Since I was trying to save space for my ramen at Parco Millenia walk, I decided to try the chicken only, since there was so much hype and rave reviews on it when it first opened in Ion.

I still don't understand why it's called 4 fingers but according to Fish, it's cos you use your index and thumb of both hands? But then again, the picture shows a weird 4 fingered hand? Hmm I am very confused but nevermind! I usually try to eat chicken wings with one thumb and one finger especially when I don't wash my hands before eating. And I try not to get so many fingers oily cos it'll be hard to answer my handphone if it rings.
Personally, I prefer having a meaty juicy chicken rather than wings, cos the wings have so much skin in proportion to the meat, and I much prefer sinking my teeth into juicy meat rather than crispy skin (fans of poultry skin please don't stone me - it's just that I prefer meat to skin since the beginning of life and I used to throw away my KFC chicken skin).
I think it's been too deeply ingrained into me that the thigh is better and chicken wings aren't cos they have a higher proportion of skin compared to meat, so I doubt that I can enjoy chicken wings the same way as I enjoya chicken thigh.
Bonchon's chicken skin has a extremely crispy batter (I have a nagging feeling that I am consuming alot of trans fats - not so sure if there really is or isn't though...), so crispy it's nearly crunchy, and I got myself the wings with their signature soy garlic sauce (as oppose to the other option of spicy, since my chilli tolerance is extremely pathetic). The garlic sauce isn't very fantastic, salty, mildly garlicky (not as garlicky as I would have imagined) but I did like the swet thai style chilli sauce that came with it.
While I was indulging in my artery clogging meal, I was watching their promotional clips on the TV screen conveniently located next to the table, where advocates and fans of 4fingers say that it's much better than KFC and Popeyes etc.
Well, it's all subjective and personally, I feel that 4fingers isn't my thing cos I'm more of a meat than skin person. But chicken skin fans rejoice - it's the perfect snack for you even though it's pretty costly at just slightly less than $8 for 7 pieces of chicken wings and drumlets. Then again, more or less everything in Ion is...

Superdog Breakfast - budget friendly and an alternative to Macs

Had Superdog for breakfast before I watched Shrek 4 (I completely missed Shrek 3 I think?). It's quite sad that that's the last movie I've watched, but I'm dying to watch Toy Story (before it ends! I want to catch the 3D movie!) and Inception, but unfortunately, yours truly will be slaving her life away on the last 2 weekends this month.Superdog is a surprisingly good breakfast find - the pancakes were beyond my expectation! I would rate them as good as Macdonalds, and they even come with 'innards', which is either chocolate chips or banana and walnut. I would recommend the banana walnut pancake cos there's 5 pieces of delicious caramelized bananas embedded in the fluffy pancake, along with a few sprinklings of chopped walnuts for that extra crunch. Chocolate chip is pretty normal and nothing out of ordinary. The pancake texture is similar to that at Macs, just that it's slightly thicker, and looks a bit more home-cooked (no nice smooth golden brown surface). Its served with butter and honey. (Btw, my meal has 1 choc chip and 1 banana cos it's usually plain pancakes, you have to top up a small sum for the choc chips and banana)

I can't remember which breakfast set this was, but there's mainly pancakes and bacon sandwiches for breakfast, though I would strongly recommend the pancakes (haven't tried the sandwich myself, but I don't like bacon).
The breakfast set I took also came with a skinny chicken sausage, which isn't the inferior nitrite filled and very preserved tasting kind that you get out of a can (think Tulip Brand) or the dark brown ones that can be procured at any supermarket for an extremely low price. Superdog uses use 100% fresh food and they don't serve any frozen meats.
The greasy bacon and its rind of fat is rather crispy, though I'm not going to comment more on this cos I didn't eat it. The sunny side up egg has a nice oozey yolk.

The premium iced teas - I had the strawberry iced tea which had a light hint of strawberry. The sugar syrup is served separately, so you can get more control on the exact sweetness you like.

Definitely a great place to hang out for a slow leisurely breakfast if you're looking for a budget friendly alternative to Macs.

I was so happy with breakfast, I came back to have hotdogs for lunch :D

Handburger

My super long overdue post from the night before my Kelong trip (can't believe it my sister actually wants to go to a kelong after her exams!!). Was trying to rush this post yesterday night, but then I was too tired to finish it :/ Plus, it's distracting me from writing my dreaded personal statement that my entire working life will hinge on... Handburger is set up by the same people who started the Soup Spoon, but that's probably where the similarities end. There was a half page article on the Handburger quite some time ago in the Sunday lifestyle section, and I've finally gotten down to trying it. Waffle Vegetable Crisps ($3.80)
Thin cut waffle crisps of a mixed of freshly cut potato, sweet potato and taro

Personally, I really disliked the dish. Other than the sweetish sauce (which was really delicious, and goes very well with fries), which was the saving grace of this dish, the vegetable crisps tasted horribly burnt. Though I must admit that they were very addictively crunchy (makes me think of Ruffles with Ridges).
What impressed me was that when we decided that it was inedible since it was so burnt, and informed the waiter, who returned it to the kitchen. He then informed us that the chef would be cooking us another batch. When the second batch came back, served personally to us by a very apologetic chef (see the picture, it still looks as burnt) and tasted burnt, we decided to 'leave it' after a few nibbles, and not to complain. After all, it was $3.80 split amongst the 3 of us, and they had already made the effort to cook another batch. It was a pleasant suprise when the bill came, and we found that the restaurant had waived the charges for the waffle vegetable crisps. Talk about a pleasant suprise indeed:)
My Chicken Caesar burger ($12 something)
Baked chicken breast wrapped with bacon, fresh mozzarella, sauteed basil pesto, mushroom, handmade caesar dressing on a bed of romaine lettuce, tomato on toasted sundried tomato with olive bun

I found the chicken breast a bit too dry and hard for my liking, but it was definitely not lacking in any flavour, especially since it was wrapped with a rasher of crisped, streaky bacon. I particularly enjoyed the juicy sauteed mushrooms, which were infused in a creamy and buttery sauce, as well as the fresh mozzarella cheese and aromatic pesto. The olive bun had the subtle salty taste of black olives, but the olive taste was not overpowering.
Pulled Pork Burger with Rustic Cornmeal bun (Around $12)
The pork shreds were moist and tender, and infused with a rich marinade. The pickled cabbage added a nice sourish tang to the pork, which would otherwise have tasted too heavy and meaty on it's own.
The Handburger Original ($13 something)
Their Original burger came with a beef patty, and is served on a caramelized onion bun.
The burgers at Handburger come with different burger buns. In fact, they even sell their burger buns (1 for $1.40, 3 for $3.80).
I'm not a big french fries fan, but the fries here are really good. Perhaps it's because I like my fries partially soggy. But these fries are the real thing - starchy strips of potatoes, with the skin on too. Sure beats the skinny, artificially golden or overly crisped fries from Macdonalds.
For people who don't mind a little rabbit food to balance out the unhealthy calorie laden burgers, opt for the chilled tomato stuffed with coleslaw. Delicious tangy and crunchy coleslaw stuffed into a poached, skinned tomato (which is rather big too - same size as my fist) drizzled with a beta-carotene rich carrot puree. This chilled tomato gives a nice zing and a refreshing tang to the oily, heavy main course.

For me, it's a hard fight choosing between the fries and the tomato - but no worries since the chilled stuffed tomato costs $3 for an alacarte order, I won't have to stress my poor little braincells thinking of which to order ;)Nutella milkshake ($6)
The highlight of this milkshake was the perfectly roasted marshmellows -they look rather unassuming at first, but once you take a bite, the crisped outer layer gives way to a gooey, strandy mess and, for me, the feeling that you get a barbecues when you roast your own marshmellows over the dying fire. The milkshake could do with way more nutella, but it's rather sweet already, so I suppose that more nutella would make it nearly impossible to drink without seriously stressing your pancreas.Lychee Mint Crush ($3.50)
Which had so many bits of lychee that it was quite a chore sucking the lychee bits through the straw. There's lots of fresh mint leaves in this extremely refreshing drink.

Service here was impressive - I was expecting cafe/bistro standard, but then I was pleasantly suprised by our waiter, who patiently took orders from 3 extremely fickle diners. I'll definitely be back, maybe to try their Prawncake burger as well as the stuffed portabello burger. And of course, I'll make sure I have space for dessert - I'm eyeing the Lemony Curd already!

Ion Orchard - R Burger

Read about the R burger in the newspapers and wanted to try it. Actually, the concept of an Asian burger isn't new in Singapore. There's quite a few stalls selling mantous with the stewed pork, topped with lettuce and mayo. But since this is Japanese, and since it was new, I decided to try it.
I went there on Sunday evening around 8 plus, and they had completely sold out their beef patties (not that it affected me), but they also sold out of their tofu nuggets (sounds like a pseudo healthy food!) and tofu chicken burger. I had the Ume (sour plum) Chicken burger set meal, minus the (standard) salad, which they replaced with chicken nuggets.

Their burger bun is a steamed mantou, which I found a bit too thick for my liking. Perhaps it was because my chicken patty was rather thin (compared to the thickness of the bun. It's about the thickness of a normal cheeseburger patty from Macs) so it just tasted very bready. I liked the Shiso leaf though - it gave the burger an interesting taste, and went pretty well with the grilled (?) chicken patty. The chicken patty wasn't too salty, and went very well with the sweet and sour ume sauce.

The Chickne nuggets aren't like Mcdonald's ones at all. These have some spices added - I spied a few pieces of chopped onion. And they are coated with a light and crispy batter. Wedges weren't very remarkable.
There is a choice of Green tea, Buckwheat tea, Milk Tea, Oolong Tea and roasted green tea for the drink, so I had the cold buckwheat tea. I personally enjoyed drinking tea with my burger - even though the combination seems really weird.
Frankly, their concept of a 'healthy' burger is quite misleading - the little roll of salad is not going to negate all the oils used to fry those wedges. I'm reading their flyer now - they add marine collagen into the buns - which apparently helps to make one's skin more beautiful. Another health reason to eat it.

The price is rather steep - $8.80 for a Burger, Salad, Wedges and Drink. Then again, everything in Ion is ex (especially the food). (Not that I'm complaining - so much new food to try! Very exciting indeed!)

I won't mind returning to R Burger to try their salmon Burger with Ankake sauce (black vinegar) or their chickne tofu burger. It's a refreshing change from Mos burger. Hopefully, the next time I visit them, the salad will be available.

Superdog

Tried Superdog at vivocity cos i had all these coupon voucher things:D anyway, they didn't even collect my discount coupons and still gave me the discount :D:D If not I wouldn't have tried it... much prefer to eat proper food instead.

Well, obviously they specialize in hotdogs - not many hotdog fast food places around here since A&W closed down (the yummy corny dog! ahhh and rootbeer floats). These are the chilli cheese fries (which i didn't try) the chilli looks quite soppy. But apparently it tastes not bad... but i can't say.
The most commendable thing about super dog is that the service is a notch above most fast food restaurants - when we asked for extra sauces they gave us 2 big containsers of tartare sauce, as well as their spicy mayonnaise sauce (which is very nice and tangy and not too creamy).
Grilled fish grilled chicken burgers. The fish was quite unique cos most other fast food places don't have grilled fish. They use the spicy mayonnaise in both the burgers, so they were quite yummy.
Hmm I can't remember what this hotdog is called but it is a chicken sausage with Sauerkraut, fried onions and lots of mustard. It was pretty ex - abotu $5(?). I thought it tasted quite ok, but i'm not exactly a hotdog or a fast food fan so i suppose I won't really go back for this.

McArabia

Though I don't quite like eating at McDonalds, I just had to eat this when I saw it! I keep thinking of deserts when I was eating it, maybe cos I was in Dubai on transit?

It's called the McArabia Meal and it comes in either beef (Kolfta) or chicken. It's 'Dressed in Arabic Flatbread', which has black seaseme seeds. The chicken McArabia is essentially like the Grilled Chicken Foldover, just that they don't have garlic in the mayonnaise.
I keep thinking of the Kampong Burger that McDonalds used to have - pineapple in any burger tastes very good :D
