Red Tea Jelly

Food Trail #9 - Red Tea Jelly Found this very unique and delicious dessert at Changi Village - I haven't seen it anywhere else before (maybe I'm blind) but it's superbly delicious. It beats Ice Cocktail Jelly, Nata de Coco and all the other jellies hands down.
Essentially, it's red tea jelly with longans and ice, and lots of evaporated milk.

The best part of it, of course, is the Red Tea Jelly, which is very fragrant and has a pleasant tea taste (but not too strong). It has a texture somewhat like Konnyaku jelly, but tastes of tea, and is red. At first glance, most people will think that it's like bandung (rose) but then it's not. It merely looks like bandung cos of the red colouring, but when you eat it, there is a vague tea taste.

The jelly is imported from Taiwan, and the store does catering for parties (though I'm not sure what exactly the arrangement is like). Apparently, the red tea jelly is a favourite amongst NS guys and you can call in to pre-order at 65457845.
If you want to take away, and live very far (like me) you can tell the aunty there and she will be more than happy to give you coarser ice (more milk too) and my desserts lasted all the way till i got home, with extra ice to spare.

They also have this very intersting Avocado dessert, which I only saw when I was about to leave - I will definately be looking forward to trying this next time :D

This brings my very happy and FULLfilling food trail to an end.

Changi Village Nasi Lemak

Food Trail #8 - Changi Village Nasi Lemak

At the far end of Singapore, which I have only passed by once in my whole 21 yrs of life. According to my street directory, it's on Netheravon Road and it's next to the Changi Point Ferry Terminal. I supposed it's near some army thing (is it Pulau Tekong??) so there's alot of army ppl walking about.

This Nasi Lemak can rival the Sultan of Brunei's one in Adam road - the chilli sauce is fried with ikan billis, very sweet and not spicy at all. The egg is fried on the spot, and the chicken wing is delightfully crispy, as crispy as cornflakes for that matter.
The best part about this is the rice, which has fragrant coconut - the rice is done just right, the grains don't stick together, yet there is enough coconut to taste.

I guess for everything we have in the central (it's not really west but then the east is so far from everything else) has an equivalent in the east, and this will be the Sultan of Brunei's Nasi Lemak counterpart.

*The Sultan of Brunei nasi lemak I'm talking about is in Adam Road Food Center, and the name of the stall isn't Sultan of Brunei - it's just tha the Sultan of Brunei gets his nasi lemak from there.

Soup Kambing

From Jalan Besar Hawker Center ($3.50 + $0.50 for bread, with unlimited top up for soup)
This is described as a 'robust soup' ie the kind that will cause your uric acid levels so soar skyhigh but it's still worth eating. It's very very very tasty, I can just imagine all the juices and delicious lamb-ey smells (I love lamb/mutton smells) zooming out from the muscle fibres and into the soup. The soup is also quite viscous, and a bit oily, but then it tastes so good that you must dip dip dip your bread inside to mop up all the soup.
Lots of v solid meat, but it's not tough. Just has more character than those flimsy thin ones that you get at some stalls. It's easy to say that this is the best Soup Kambing I've eaten.

I'm not sure of the address of this place yet, except tt it's v near Boon Keng road, and the stall faces the carpark. If I am not wrong, there is a sign , probably along Kallang Ave and there is the number 23 on the food center.

Geylang Lorong 9 Frog Porridge

This is the best dish and the highlight of the food trail :D
Actually, I'm not supposed to post this yet cos I'm doing it in running order, but i'm tired and my photos are taking so long to load, so I absolutely must post this first, since it's so nice it can't stay as a draft.
I hate frogs (disgusting hunched creatures, beady eyes, blubous skin, and erratic hops and get squashed by cars super gross. I hate it when they display the whole tank of gross frogs in the coffeeshop) but they're really good when cooked in a claypot and gravy, with dried chilli, ginger and chong.I can just imagine them chopping up the frog, pulling the disgusting green breathable skin (I always imagine that it's porus and has billions of holes like a gauze, when you gaze down a microscope and look at it but I have no idea if its really true. Cos if the frog breathes through it's skin, then it must mean that the skin is holey for the oxygen to diffuse??)
Anyway, as I was saying, taking the frog and chopping it up (removing the toe webs) and dumping it into a pot and cooking it to perfection. It's so soft and fresh, I think it could only have come from a live animal. The frog legs are very smooth and tender - in fact, when people told me that frog meat was called 'tian ji' I used to think that it meant 'sweet chicken' instead of 'rice field chicken'. The sauce is heavenly when eaten with the porridge, and the meat glides down your throat when you swallow.
This is once place that I'm eagerly waiting to return to, especially with my family (cos then I can order more more more!)

We ordered 3 frogs and it's about $8 each frog. But though pricey, the delicious dish justifies the cost, and it's really a must try on my list.Geylang Lorong 9

Bedok Cheng Tng

Food Trail #5 - Bedok Road Cheng Tng - last stop before rest time
Hot, cold and takeaway cheng teng costs the same - all $2
Though slightly pricier than usual cheng tngs, it's worth the $2 cos this is the most generous helping of the brown cheng tng jelly thing. There's really alot of the brown stuff and these are in clumps and not in little broken bits.
The cheng tng is different from the usual because there are mung beans inside (the stuff that makes tau suan) This gives you someting to chew on, and there are also wintermelon strips.
Dried persimmon for flavour, and a little strip of winter melon.

They don't charge extra for take-away, and they use ice cubes instead of shaved ice.

When we where there, there were 2 people enquiring about filming the stall for some show. I think if it weren't so far away, I'd be very happy to patronize it regularly. That's the owner in the hawaiian shirt.

Jalan Tua Kong Fishball Noodles

Food Trail #4 Ah Lin Fishball Noodles
$4 will get you a bowl of 2 fishballs, one meatball, lean pork, minced pork and 4 fresh prawns.
The noodles are the good quality kind, and it's slightly translucent.
It's not too oily, and it has a bit of vinegar and ketchup.

At the junction of East Coast Road and Jalan Tua Kong

Puteri Mas Durian Puffs

Stop #3
Goodwood park better watch out! There's this small bakery in Joo Chiat which has great durian puffs! These bite sized puffs are really soft and fresh, and yet they aren't soggy. And they're stuffed with durian cream. Though not as hard and as solidly packed with durian, I like them cos the puff is so soft and delicious, and the creamy durian flavour spreads through your mouth. Yum! I'm sure I can easily devour half a box by myself, especialy if they're nicely chilled.
It's $9 for a box of 20 mini puffs (minimum order, seems like quite alot but don't worry, sure can eat finish one), and they also sell durian cakes.

Food Trail Stop #2
After the quite filling prawn mee, we went to Joo Chiat Road to try Tau Kuah Pau.
I only discovered about the existance of taukuahpau early this month, and wanted to give it a try since it sounded so unique. Actually, I had a completely different mental picture. I was thinking of a 'pau' which wasn't a bread pau but a bean curd skin and inside the parcel of tau kuah skin, there will be duck and cucumbers and egg. Lo and behold, my mental picture was completely off. Actually, it's a beancurd which is cut and stuffed with the ingredients and not a bean curd skin. The stall is called Mary's Corner and apparently this isn't the original tau kuah pau. However, from what people have told me, this one is supposedly better. But I've yet to make a comparison. Next time when I have the space and time, I shall try the one at the Beer Garden.

It's a fried bean curd topped with minced duck, chopped egg and cucumber. Its drenched in sweet sauce used for braised duck, and comes with a chillied sauce which is slightly sweet.
I quite like this dish cos the tofu tastes really fresh, and is crispy on the outside and piping hot. The minced meat and cucumbers and egg sticks to the tofu because of the sweet sauce, and it's a good mix of crunchy and sweet ingredients.

Food Trail - Beach Road Prawn Mee Eating House

Went for my first food trail today and ate from about 1pm till 9 pm (with a rest in between). Thanks to Mr Kompetitive (the unofficial chauffer) and C (the treasurer) for the planning. Ppl who went along were flyfairy (who didn't even finish 1/4 th of the food trail and kept saying that she was full), cel and hl.
We started off by pooling $20 each and we spent $18 at the end of the day.

Stop #1 of our food trail:
Beach Road Prawn Mee eating house - highly recommended by cel (who said that this prawn mee is worth eating a whole bowl and wasting stomach space). It's $4 a bowl (I think). I couldn't taste much cos there was chilli (only tasted chilli) but the prawn was very fresh and the onions oily and tasty.
The soup was very sweet and had a very strong prawn taste, but I think it must have had lots of salt inside, cos we were all very thirsty after eating this.
I think the prawn mee is quite good (by the taste of the soup) but for people who don't live in the east (like me) the equivalent is the Adam Road Prawn mee (which also comes in Lobster, Crab, Super Huge Prawn versions). It's quite a close fight but then for convenience, I'd go back to Adam road.
This is the fishcake from the rojak stall - it's crispy and deep fried and very unhealthily processed but nevertheless, very tasty.
