Dean and Deluca

Tried Dean and Deluca at Central on a weekday. The queue is insane on weekends. Though I must say that the food is very underwhelming and I was not impressed at all by my bagel cos it was hard and dry and the cream cheese was spread so thinly that I could hardly taste it. The scrambled eggs were a bit too runny but tasted creamy enough.

The pancakes fared much better.
I definitely wont be queuing here. I'm feeling that the local food has been very uninspiring lately and it's extremely expensive for something u could easily make at home. Oh well.

Currytime

A rather new restaurant by the founders of old Chang kee - relive yesteryear with those tin plates, marble tables, tiffin carriers, cheong sams and old style music at Currytimes.

I had the lunch set ($8.90 nett) which was their signature chicken and potato curry, choice of prata or bread or rice, side dish of the day and drink. The curry is supposed to be very wholesome and indeed it was so thick and rich it's hard not to believe that no coconut milk was used. Though the curry was not bad, the prata was an immense disappointment and simply unsatisfactory. Chap Chye was bleagh.
Fortunately, I had foresight that it would be inadequate to fill my growling stomach and ordered their signature curry bun ($1.50) whih was spectacular! Think old Chang kee curry puff filling in a soft fluffy toasted bun. Salivating as I type this...
Btw I was so famished I also ordered the Chendol ($3.90) which was another disappointment. Thin stringy Chendol and clumpy coconut milk. The attap chee was one of the best quality ones I've eaten - translucent fat and juicy. Mmmm!

Best Apple chips

I'm studying for my exams now and I've just found a great snack to munch while ploughing through Catherine parchment smith.

Apple chips from Taste matters (www.taste-matters.com.sg) superbly thin and crunchy -those store bought ones really can't compare. Tastes like real apples and great for snacking on. Best of all there's no added sugar. $16.80 for 6 small packs. Go to their website and make an order -free delivery with $30 and above.

Cebu

I've been neglecting this blog far too long partially cos of work commitments (especially since i feel that Im dying a few days earlier after I finish each shift...Its quite strange cos previously I just felt like I aged more aft each call ) and partly because I'm feeling great inertia to blog about the foods I've eaten. ...Shall try to start again!

I've just returned from the beautiful island of Cebu where
I gouged myself on mangoes. Philippines is one of the major exporters for dried mangoes and I'm sure most people have tried the famous 7D dried mangoes.

Halo-halo is one of the popular Filipino desserts. It's a combination of yam
(ube) ice cream, attap seeds, jelly, beans, shaved ice and milk and it's a refreshing dessert on a hot day. Sometimes it comes with A caramel custard like pudding too. It's not too sweet either cos there's shaved ice to offset the creaminess and sweetness of the ice cream.
I'm not sure if anyone else remembers but when I was younger and my maid came back from her holiday to Philippines she will buy halo halo ice cream and it'll come packed in dried ice so that it can survive the flight back to Sgp. Somehow the yam Ice cream from Philippines tastes better than the ones we get in Singapore.

Till the next time! Hopefully soon!

7Adam

7Adam is this newish little known restaurant housed in one of the black and white colonial bungalows in Adam Park. Parking is in the premises and is free. Was there to try their appetisers and had a iced chocolate (quite underwhelming) but their kit kat alcoholic drink (can't remember what it's called exactly) looks really tempting, but comes with a hefty price tag of >$20++
The portions are tiny, taste is average, service was pretty good cos when we went there it was nearly empty (it was at a very odd time, after their lunch hour) but they very kindly obliged us and prepared food even though the kitchen was supposed to have closed:)
I think it's a great place to chill and relax, especially since they have such nice seating and decor (though being truly singaporean I would hate to sit al fresco, even though the al fresco seating area looks really nice! I don't appreciate sharing my dinner with all the flies and mosquitoes...).

Joo joo - by awfully chocolate

The banana nutella crepe ($16++) exceeded expectations with a halved banana and a partially melted sugar crust. I liked the way that they didnt completely melt the sugar so that there were contrasting textures. My only grouse was that there wasn't enough nutella - perhaps it could come with additional nutella on the side.

The apple tart was not bad either with a thin fluffy puff pastry and a thinly sliced apple on top.

I also got the pandan tart ($6) from mooshi baked (the bakery arm) which came in an unusual shade of green. The pandan filling texture was closer to custard than a pudding/jelly and I didn't quite like it cos it also tasted too eggy.
I'll definitely be back to try their breakfast menu and more crepes as well as their nutella drink (as u can tell I really like nutella)

Latteria Mozzarella

Happy Easter everyone!
I've just gotten back from a short break to Thailand (where I at a disappointing meal at Zanotti) and I'm even sadder cos I'm closer to 7 months of posting that I'm not particularly crazy over and looking through the Board of Sadness (59 other sad souls and counting...) is not helping either...

Went to La Mozzarella about 2 months back (but didn't have time to blog so here's the post now...)
Major disappointment with the bread - it's so freaking hard that it can be used as a weapon.
Fresh burrata - my favourite cheese cos it's so soft and creamy. And the cherry tomatoes are insanely sweet feels like you're eating grapes...
Yummy crabmeat linguine with mascarpone cheese - can't beat Valentino's lobster linguine with pink sauce but it comes close! I am such a sucker for any seafood based linguine with pink sauce.
Mac and Cheese - done La Mozzarella style
It's baked inside a whole pumpkin and it does get quite tiring to eat the same dish after a while. I would suggest to share this amongst 2 people. Just as well that the bread was hard cos I have poor self control when it comes to restaurant bread especially it's soft and fluffy and comes with great olive oil.

The pumpkin was baked until it was soft and pulpy but the whole thing together was just too filling - it could easily feed 2. I would only recommend this dish if you can share.

Personally, I enjoyed the starter the most and there were at least 2 -3 other fresh cheese starters that I wanted to try. Perhaps next time I shall order 2-3 starters and less mains...
Lemon panna cotta with berries in balsamic sauce
I dislike anything with citrus but I suppose that it serves some purpose here cos it's supposed to make the panna cotta lighter. I don't see why anyone wants to disguise panna cotta as a light dessert when it's obviously made from lots of cream and delicious calorie laden things but I really liked the berries layer.
Cos I don't like lemon, I prophylactically got myself a gelato to top off my meal just in case I didn't like the panna cottta :D

Kinki

I'm back after gorging myself on restaurant week - tried 3 restaurant week restaurants (out of which 2 are worth mentioning) and ate out in restaurants x2 more so now I'm broke but my tummy is very happy.

Just a short pictorial post cos I really can't remember how much everything cost (not cheap) but since I've taken the photos I might as well put it up).
Went to Kinki a loooong while back
Century egg and tofu with crabmeat
Sashimi platter - very fresh but very expensive
Tempura soba
Okonomiyaki - I didn't quite like this one cos the base reminded me of pizza-crust but taste wise it's good
Garlic fried rice - my ultimate favourite
Miso cod - not bad but the portion was rather small (seems to be the trend with new restaurants nowadays)
This was my peach drink which was sweet and refreshing but too little alcohol.
The bar on top is really nice and has a view of MBS. The decor reminds me of those dirty old pubs but it's really very nice and clean and breezy.

Plain vanilla

I never knew this place existed until someone gave my mum a box of these.

Until now, I haven't really been impressed by any commercially baked cupcake and the only one that I ate on a regular basis was marmalade pantry's geisha cupcake which they have discontinued - and the only reason why I liked it was because they used pandan icing and I'm a huge fan of anything with pandan.

The cupcakes are very fresh and come with a generous swirl of icing. The cake base is really good - it is fresh, moist, not overly fluffy but solid enough to hold the icing and to be filling.
My favourite flavour is the strawberry with white chocolate icing -the cupcake has a tiny depression in the middle for a piece of fresh strawberry. I'm not really a chocolate person (save for the chocolate origins cake that I'm craving for) but the chocolate banana and chocolate hazelnut ( with nutella!) are pretty good. The cookies is not bad and have crushed Oreos blended into the icing. Other flavours are red velvet (I found this average) milk chocolate (haven't tried this yet but it's in my fridge) carrot (looks like a carrot cake, have yet to try this too).

I've eaten this at least 4 times in the last week cos its convenient to get to. Im v sure that in the next few weeks to come plain vanillas popularity will explode and pretty soon I will have to queue long long long to get my cupcake fix.

Do note that they dont provide plastic bags but the box is really sturdy. Just makes it a bit troublesome if ur getting more than two boxes...
