The Sushi Bar

The Sushi Bar is a very impressive hole in the wall restaurant tucked in the corner of Far East Plaza. I tried x2 before this very unsuccessfully - first time they were packed for 2 dinner seatings on a weekend, and the second time they were so overwhelmed that they weren't even doing takeaways...

Anyway, I finally managed to get a seat for a Saturday lunch, We shared the premium chirashi don ($45) which reminded me of a higher end version of the old Wasabi Tei's. Jammed packed with fresh generous slices of sashimi (salmon, hamachi, scallop, swordfish, tuna tataki), a good portion of sweet uni, eel, roe, tamago and prawn. It's such a busy chirashi don that it's a bit overwhelming to decide where to start from.
Their very famous salmon aburi maki roll ($15) which is as good as the reviews. Actually, you can't go very wrong with thick slices of aburi (blow torched) salmon and avocado. Top it all off with aburi mentaiko sauce it's a winning combination.
Scallop Mentaiyaki ($15++)
I'm a big fan of mentaiko (pollock roe) and I consciously save my cholesterol quota for this (and foie gras). Fresh scallop carpaccio dressed with mentaiko sauce - the sweet scallops go really well with the umami taste of the mentaiko sauce.
The blow torch beef which is supposedly very very yummy.

They're just done with some renovations - hopefully the place is bigger now cos snagging a seat here is really a pain. They don't take reservations on Saturdays so that more people can get a seat.
