Satsuma

Yay I'm so pleased - I bought a Kingston SD card for 12 bucks at the Science Fair yesterday! (as well as a cup of iscream yoghurt)now I dun have to wait forever to transfer photos from my China brandless SD card (which costs 10 bucks) :DWent to Satsuma for lunch, with Julie, J and K (who were in agony when the food came because they wanted to eat - but tolerated Julie and me snapping multiple photos :P) The lunch sets come with pickes, soup and dessert. Amex credit cards currently have a 1 for 1 lunch set offer - MUST go there if you have the Amex card! So CHEAP. This was the (not) complimentary starter, the "Stick Salada" which was chilled crunchy veggies served with a refreshingly sour dressing. It costs us $4++ but it's quite a good portion (if you like cabbage and other raw veggies).Mentai Supagete ($12++) is Mentaiko (marinated roe) spaghetti (as you can tell by the Engrish spelling) was a really tiny portion (for a main) and a good sized portion if you want it as an appetiser. The sauce was filled with the creamy goodness of roe and butter (I think). However, the noodles were overcooked, and was too soggy (especially since it was mixed in the gooey mentaiko sauce). I'm a stickler for al dente pasta, so even the sauce can't save this (for me at least). This is the highly recommended Kaki no Omuraisu ($13++ for the lunch set), which I ordered (after agonizing on all the <$20 lunch sets)It's fried rice with oyster wrapped inside a delicious omelette (brings back nice Secondary school days at Taka food court and omu rice memories). There are 3 huge pieces of very fresh oysters (one was like XXL and the others were XL and L). The rice was moist and there's a extremely tasty gravey (prob because of the oysters). One of the few times that I actually enjoy having gravey in my food -the gravey isn't the starchy kind, more watery and tastes of seafood.Buta Niku Ume ni Don ($13) Pork Belly and Plum Stew Rice Bowl
The plum gave the pork belly a pinking hue, and I think this dish is really interesting, though I won't order it because I don't like the fats from the pork belly.
Chirashi Don ($18)
Julie ordered this - so for a more concise review of this, go to her blog :D
The Sumiyaki Moriawase Teishoku ($18++) is great for meat lovers- it comes with a variety of grilled meats, including beef, unagi (eel), chicken meat balls, asparagus wrapped in pork and grilled mushrooms.
The rice served together with the mixed grilled rice set is topped with minced chicken and sweet marinated mushrooms.
The miso soup is served with a generous amount of mushrooms, and the soup isn't too salty.
Dessert was lime sorbet, which I didn't like because it was too sour (and bitter!). However, the texture was really smooth and my other citrus loving friends enjoyed the sweet end to the meal.
Satsuma is a quiet little restaurant tucked into the Gallery Hotel. It's a pity that it's in such a inaccessable location, because the food here's really good. We were the only diners in the restaurant for lunch - fortunately because we made so much noise - definitely would have pissed off the other diners. Best of all, the service, ambience and decor is really nice.

My ala carte order of kaki no omuretsu wasn't omu rice. It's just egg omelette with oysters and lots of mushrooms inside!
