This actually isn't a food post, but then since it is regarding a Prawn, and I like the Crystal Jade Prawn and Egg Yolk Hor Fun, I shall just post it here.
We went to some place in ChoaChuKang that had prawn fishing. It's near the Qian Hu Fish Farm there and down this damn creepy ulu road with lots of dogs. The Prawn Pond is opened 24 hours, and it's the only brightly litted thing in the whole area. The whole place smells of goat, but then we couldn't see any goats nearby, but I'm quite sure that there is a goat farm somewhere (yum i love goats milk :D next time I shall look for a goat farm and buy a bottle home)
We realised that there are actually alot of boliao people like us, who go prawn fishing at 1am in the morning, on a Wed morning!
Anyway, it's $13 per hour per rod and if you buy 2 hours, you get 1 hour free. You also get this plastic bag with frozen cockles for bait. And there is a chopping board for you to chop up the bloody cockle.
Since it was our first time prawn fishing (and you use a fishing rod to fish for the prawn, and not a net to scoop them up - I know what some people are thinking that) we kept loosing our bait cos the prawn will nibble it up before we realise, or maybe cos we (actually, deborah and her sister, and not me, since I completely didn't touch the cockles - I help to hold the rod only) didn't put the bait on properly so it dropped out.
Anyway, after like 30-40min, deb's sister pulled out a prawn! and being completely unprepared, she started screaming and so everyone around the previously peaceful pond turned and looked at us. Since the line was very long, and the prawn kept swinging about, and lots of water splashed everywhere. It'll be quite nice to steam the live prawn with XO and garlic :D dump it straight into a steamer and cook it!
At the most vital moment, deborah was washing her hands at the sink which was far away, and I was holding part of the line so that the prawn won't be hanging over the pond (and dropping in) but i didn't want to touch it cos it had damn long (but rudimentary) claws.
Anyway, some nice person came over and helped us take the hook out of the prawn's mouth and pluck off the long claws.
After that, deborah wanted to dump it into the small red pail (filled with water) on the edge of the pond but then the guy who helped us was like NO, you must put it into a net. (We realised only much later that the pail was meant for washing hands, and not for putting the prawns that you caught.)
Since the prawn had so many legs, it seemed very unbothered that it had just had 2 of it's claws plucked out. The last 15 min was spent experimenting with the prawn. When we pulled the net completely out of water, the prawn would stay still and not move at all. But then once it's partially submerged in water, the prawn will happily scuttle in a circle round and round and round happily.
This is the big headed prawn. If only it's head was smaller and the body bigger then more people could eat it! It's pretty fiesty, it jumped out of the net when deb's sister was trying to put it into a plastic bag, then onto the floor, where it started walking (until someone else caught and put it into the plastic bag)
*ps. heard from Deb, her sis didn't want to eat the prawn, so her maid steamed it and ate it. Apparently, it was very tasteless. Dunno why. But it was quite fun catching the prawn :)
This is Rascal who is a Jack Russell and it has many brown spots on his body, and does not have a tail.
